Mary C. Lacy, of Indianapolis, Indiana died Thursday October 27, 2011 while at St. Vincent Hospice.
Born in Elba, Alabama on September 25, 1926 she was the only child of Clem Simmons and Cora Hammond Simmons. Mary was educated in Elba public schools and went on to graduate from Coffee County high school in Elba and continued her studies at North Carolina A&T University.
Mary moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1952 and began her career at Ft. Benjamin Harrison Finance Center where she was the Section Chief for Claims and Data Processing and earned the certification of Advanced Comptrollers. Mary worked at Ft. Benjamin Harrison until her retirement in 1979.
Mary was a civic leader through her founding of the Grandview Civic Association, where she served as the President for over 40 years, Director for the C-4 (Crooked Creek Community Foundation), Founding member and President of the Kikawah’s social organization, and served on the Clowes Hall Women’s committee for many years.
She was a devoted member of Barnes United Methodist Church were she wed her husband Jewett Lacy in 1957. Mary served in many roles throughout her 54 years and her last was the membership Secretary for 20 plus years where she was the smiling face that welcomed you into the Barnes church family.
Mary loved good food, socializing and her family. Mary was known for her gentle smile that could light up a room, kind words and sweet personality.
Mary leaves her devoted husband Jewett Lacy, sons; Clem D. Lacy, Jerry W. Lacy (Michele McClure Lacy), Richard S. Lacy and granddaughter Chanelle R. Lacy as well as first cousin, Sue Hayes and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be Saturday November 5, 2011 at 12:00 pm at Barnes United Methodist Church, 900 West 30th Street, with visitation from  10:00 am – 12:00 pm. Entombment will be at Crown Hill Cemetery.
