Dr. Janis M. Oldham, 65, of Greensboro, North Carolina peacefully completed her life’s journey to be with the Lord on July 14, 2021 surrounded by two of her brothers, Donald Jr. and Michael. She was born March 31, 1956 to Donald and Jean Oldham. She considered herself to be her big sister’s (Sherril) first birthday gift!

Dr. Oldham was born in Indianapolis, Indiana where she attended school. She graduated from North Central High School in 1974.  Dr. Oldham continued the family legacy of excellence in education by studying mathematics at the University of Chicago where she was on the Dean’s list.  After graduating from the University of Chicago, she joined her sister at Purdue University.  There she obtained a M.S. in Mathematics.  In 1990, she completed her Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Oldham began her career in education at UC-Davis and then received a position at North Carolina A & T.  In July 1991 she was offered a permanent tenure position as an Associate Professor. At North Carolina A & T, Dr. Oldham was a mentor to pre-doctoral students and taught the honors math courses.  She prided herself in being a more difficult professor, expecting excellence from her students as well as herself. One of her students said this about her and her class:

“Not the easiest class. She is tough, and not extremely easy going, but she is absolutely great at teaching the material. I would recommend this professor if you are going to put in the work, because you can't just coast through, but it will help you out down the line”

Dr. Oldham had a strong faith in God and love for her family.  She confessed her faith at the tender age of 13 at Westlane Christian Church. She continued serving God in various churches as she continued her studies. When she arrived in Greensboro, North Carolina, she became a faithful member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church.

Her love for her family was evident to all who met her. Dr. Oldham loved to tell stories of her family to anyone who would listen, especially those about her nieces and nephews. Between Purdue and Berkley, she even took care of her oldest niece.

For the past 17 years, Dr. Oldham was the primary caretaker for her mother. They had a special bond, and were constant companions at University and church events. She continued that loving care for her mother until her last days.

In her last days, Dr. Oldham found comfort in her faith and experiences as a mathematician. She said that as a mathematician she understood the notion of  infinity and she knew she would spend that infinite amount of time with her Lord and Saviour.

Dr. Oldham was preceded in death by her father, Donald Oldham, Sr. and her sister, Sherril Oldham Jones. She is survived by her mother, Jean Oldham; brothers, Donald Jr. (April), Michael, and Stephan Oldham; 4 nieces, 5 nephews and 6 great nieces and 1 great nephew and a host of family and friends.

Dr. Oldham will be truly missed by all those who knew her.
