Lonnie Gene Matheny was born on February 13, 1948 in Walnut Grove, Mississippi.  He moved with his family to Indianapolis, Indiana as a youth.  Lonnie grew up in the church and was baptized as a young boy. His final church home was  Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church.

He attended Indianapolis Public Schools and was a proud graduate of Crispus Attucks High School, class of 1966. Lonnie enjoyed all sports, especially tennis and basketball and participated in choir and student government. He returned south to attend college at Arkansas State University, where he was a student leader and majored in history. He graduated from ASU in 1971. While in Arkansas, he met and married Jacqueline Moore- Matheny  in June of 1970. Upon being the first in his family to graduate from college he and Jackie returned to Indianapolis.

The young couple settled in Indianapolis and had twin daughters. Lonnie's favorite topic of conversation was his girls, and his granddaughters would also steal his heart.  Lonnie was the ultimate girl dad and enjoyed spending time with his family and took pride in providing a good life for them.

After graduation from ASU, Lonnie held a supervisor position at Freightliner, until 1978  and  worked at  Seal Air from 1979- 2012 where he was Plant Supervisor of Supply Chain.  He retired from Sealed Air at 64, but continued to work in the meat department at Meijer where he enjoyed interacting with customers. He retired from Meijer last year, due to his daughters concerns of his exposure to the public during the Covid Pandemic.

Lonnie was a loyal family man, father and friend, and often spoke proudly of his twins, and granddaughters. He was so proud that his oldest granddaughter would be the 3rd generation of Mathenys  to attend college. Lonnie loved travel and was planning to continue traveling  internationally, and see the world once it was safe to travel again.  Lonnie passed away on June, 3, 2021 from complications related to diabetes.

Lonnie was preceded in death by his mother and father, Levera and L. J Matheny.  Lonnie is survived by his wife of thirty years, Jacqueline Moore- Matheny; daughters, Stacy Matheny and Stephanie Matheny-Weddle, of Indianapolis; son-in-law,  Brian Weddle of Indianapolis; granddaughters, Courtney Matheny and Jacqueline Weddle of Indianapolis, and a host of other loving family members and friends.
