On the 27th of April 2020, Delbert Lee Johnson departed this life. He entered this life on October 2, 1950. He was born to the late Richard Lee Johnson and Ida Darnella Johnson (nee` Steward). Delbert started his education at Public School #42, later transferring to Riverside School #44. He went on to attend Northwest High School.

He was employed by Chrysler Motors here in Indianapolis, where he worked for 15 years. He then worked in home remodeling and construction. He joined his brother assisting him until his health began to fail.

Delbert was a gifted artist, working in pencil, pastels and oils. His works remain coveted possessions by those fortunate enough to own them. He possessed the ineffable ability to capture the essence of his subjects, bringing them to life on canvas.

As the eldest brother, Delbert - also called “Chief” - was very protective of his younger siblings. He watched over them growing up and could always be relied on as a source of strength during difficult times.

Delbert moved to Colorado for a period of time before returning to Indianapolis.

Delbert leaves to cherish his memory his son, Damien Johnson; a loving sister, Princess A. Moore (Benjamin Moore); loving brothers, David Louis Johnson and Dennis Ivan Johnson; nieces, Bettina Tinnin (Kermit Tinnin Jr.), LaQuesha Hawkins (Bobby Douthit) and Charmaine Blackwell (Mike Blackwell); nephews, Marcus Hawkins, David Johnson II, and Justin Johnson; and a host of additional nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Dale Robert Johnson, Donald Lee Johnson and his longtime companion, Sandra Yvonne Tharpe.
