Valerie Lee Johnson was born February 27, 1963, to Nadine Sloan and Eddie Newson in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was raised by her mother Nadine and stepfather Robert Franklin, who she lovingly called Da-Da, and affectionately spoke of growing up with her brothers and sister. Valerie gave her life to Christ at an early age at South Calvary Baptist Church in Indianapolis.
