WILLIAM KIRTZ Obituary

Life...

William Harvey Kirtz, Sr. (“Captain Kirtz of the Starship Enterprise”), 70, spent his last day on earth August 1, 2022.  His wife of 35 years was by his side holding his hand as he departed.

William was born on December 22, 1951, in Richmond, Indiana to Robert Kirtz and Sarah Stevenson.  He was the only child born in this union.   After the untimely passing of his father, he lived with his grandfather in Richmond.  As a teenager, he often traveled from Richmond to Muncie to visit his mother.

William married Dorothy Wandricks and was blessed with five children. Some years later, William met Cheryl Hopkins, who had two children of her own from a prior marriage. After a five-year courtship, the two married in March 1987, joining two families with not a dull moment.

William was an incredibly hard worker.  He began his truck driving career at Glazer Scrap Corp. in Richmond, and ultimately retired from Omni Source Corp. (Indianapolis) in August 2014.  He never grew tired of telling his family about his experiences driving those big rigs, and he never grew tired of frequenting restaurants for a great big steak and a margarita.

William was full of life and had personality for days.  He was a beast at the roller-skating rink, took pride in how he dressed, and loved his cars.  William was a jokester, loving to rhyme words and throw out famous quotes (that he made up)!  One of his favorite sayings, “ain’t nothing but a party,” was the motto he lived by, and as a result, he never met a stranger.

William had interesting taste in music, often wearing a cool pair of shades and bouncing his head to Cream, Steely Dan, The Rolling Stones, or Led Zeppelin. Some of his favorite TV shows included: Sanford & Son, Hogans Heroes, and (of course) Star Trek.

William was preceded in death by his parents and two of his grandchildren, Marissa Kirtz and Trey Elzy.

William is survived by his wife, Cheryl; children, William H. Kirtz, Jr., Eli Kirtz, Deon Kirtz, Andre (Jennifer) Kirtz, Simonne (Arthur) Smith, Toni Elzy and Brandee (Noah) Chanin; 19 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Dwight (Roslyn) Holland; sister, Glorianne (Scott) Meyers; and a host of other relatives and friends.
