Welton "Sonny" Troutman, Jr., was born on March 11, 1967, to Marcia Patton-Dardy and Welton Troutman, Sr., in Indianapolis, Indiana.
A proud graduate of Pike High School, Class of 1985, Sonny was a gifted athlete, excelling in basketball and track and field. His athleticism and competitive spirit were evident throughout his high school years and beyond.
Sonny went on to coach many youth teams, passing on his knowledge, passion, and wisdom to the next generations. He was known not just for his skills on the field, but also the genuine care exuded to his players. He guided them not only to excel in sports but also in life, teaching lessons that transcended the games they played.
Sonny was more than just an athlete and coach. He was a kind, gentle, and affectionate man, known for his warmth and the way he treated everyone with respect. He never met a stranger, always greeting people with a smile and an open heart. He had the rare ability to make everyone feel like they mattered, whether through his friendly demeanor, his listening ear, or his endless ability to make others laugh.
Sonny enjoyed solving problems and engaging in thoughtful discussions, always eager to share his knowledge and engage in a good debate, no matter the topic. His wisdom and life lessons were something he loved to impart, always encouraging those around him to think critically and live thoughtfully.
In addition to his intellectual pursuits and passion for sports, Sonny had an eye for style. He was known for his love of Kango hats and for always dressing sharply, no matter the occasion. Nattily attired at all times, his sense of fashion was an extension of his vibrant personality, always neat, always put together, and always making a statement.
For many years, Sonny worked as a semi-truck driver and forklift operator, showing the same dedication and work ethic that he brought to everything else in his life. His hard work and reliability made him a valued member of his team, and he took great pride in providing for his family.
Sonny was joined in Holy Matrimony to Tonya L. Jefferson on May 2, 1998. Together they shared a blended family.
Sonny devoted his life to Christ, finding strength and purpose in his faith. He believed deeply in the power of perseverance, often quoting, “Victory is not promised to the swift nor strong, but to those that endure to the end.” (Ecclesiastes 9:11). This mindset guided him through all the challenges of life, and he instilled this unwavering belief in those around him.
Sonny departed this life on September 16, 2025, at the age of 58 years. He is preceded in death by his father, Welton Troutman, Sr.; stepfather, Jesse “Boo” Dardy; grandparents, Ladora “Mousie” Patton, and Priscilla and Walter Henderson, and grand-children, DaMoni Troutman, Legacii Troutman, and Lyric Washington.
