VIRGIL R. MADDEN

Virgil R. Madden, 69, Indianapolis, departed this life on June 14, 2010.

Having served in numerous capacities in Indiana state government, he retired as Acting Chief for the Bureau of Population Health for the Health and Hospital Corporation for Marion County Public Health Department.  He was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church.  His educational accomplishments include degrees earned from Butler University, a University Ghana program and the Indiana University Hoosier Fellows Leadership Program.  He had authored a column in The Criterion, entitled “Notes on Black History”, and he was the Executive Producer/Director/Writer of American Music:  The Black Perspective, which was performed at Clowes Hall.  He was a founding board member at Stonegate Early College High School, a founding member of Habitat for Humanity of Indianapolis, and at Butler University, he was a former President and active member of the Alumni Board of Directors, and on the Advisory Board.

On Sunday, June 21, there will be a visitation from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Stuart Mortuary Chapel.  On Monday, June 22, there will be calling from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at St. Matthews Catholic Church, 4100 East 56th Street with interment at Sutherland Park Cemetery, Indianapolis.

He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Shirley M. Madden; brother, Edward (Lillie) Madden; sisters, Brenda (Michael) Gray and Nellie Madden, nephews and nieces.
