Vernell Haggins was born November 29, 1938, in Parkin, Arkansas, the daughter Cornelius Haggins and Martha Hollis-Haggins.
Vernell received her elementary education in the Parkin, Arkansas School System. She later relocated to Illinois with her family where she continued her education in the Pulaski County School System at Washington Grade School Olmsted and graduated from Lovejoy High School Mound City. After completing high school, Vernell moved to Chicago where she attended business school and earned her Associate’s degree. She obtained employment with the Spiegel Catalog Company. After a few years, Vernell moved to Indianapolis. Armed with her education she went to work for the government as an accountant. She later retired from Defense Finance Accounting Service (DFAS) in 2018 after nearly 30 years of service to the state and federal government.
Vernell professed a faith in Christ at an early age and united with First Missionary Baptist Church Olmsted. Upon her relocation to Indianapolis, she united with Eastern Star Church where she served for more than 40 years under the leadership of Pastor William M. Robinson and Pastor Jeffrey A. Johnson, Sr. Some of the ministries Vernell served in include but was not limited to the Usher Ministry, Sunday School Teacher and Senior Saints.
In her free time, Vernell enjoyed traveling and was an avid cook. Her family especially enjoyed her baking. There was not a “favorite dish” as it was ALL good!
Vernell Haggins transitioned from labor to reward on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at the age of 86. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Sam and David Haggins; sisters, Seresta, Edna, Mable, Lucille, and Irma Haggins. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving niece and caregiver, Catrina Ballance (Derrick); nephew, Michael Haggins; nieces, Deborah Dillion, and Leola Ladd-Harley of Olmsted, IL; and a host of great nieces, great nephews, other relatives and friends.
