STANLEY WARREN, JR., PHD Obituary

Stanley Warren Jr. was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Stanley Warren Sr. and Rachel Johnson Warren. Dr. Warren   professed his love for Christ at an early age and was raised is a Christian Household.

Dr. Warren’s career in education earned him national and local recognition for his historical scholarship and his work in advancing educational diversity. An author of four books and more than 100 journals, magazine and newspaper articles, Dr. Warren frequently consulted and spoke on contemporary educational issues and the history of African Americans in Indianapolis.

Dr. Warren, a graduate of and teacher at Crispus Attucks High School, had an extensive educational background. He earned a B.A. from Indiana Central College and advanced degrees including an M.A., Ed.S., and Ed.D. from Indiana University, Northwestern University, Hampton University, and Howard University.

Dr. Warren’s awards were numerous. He was a Carnegie Fellow, John Hay Fellow, Lilly Fellow, National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow and State Student Assistance Commissioner. Dr. Warren was inducted into the Indianapolis Public Schools Hall of Fame and named a Distinguished Alumnus of both the University of Indianapolis and the      Indiana University School of  Education.

Dr. Warren’s civic involvement was extensive. He served as a board member of the Crispus Attucks High School Museum, Historic Landmarks Foundation, Indiana Historical Society, University of Indianapolis Alumni Association. He was also a life member of the Indiana University Alumni Association, member of the100 Black Men of Indianapolis and served as Treasurer of the Indiana Historical Society and was a member of American Legion Post 249. Dr. Warren served two years in the U.S. Army.

Dr. Warren enjoyed a spirited game of Golf, Jazz Music, engagement with the written word, hanging out with friends and lively meetings with members of his book club, The Indy Readers.

Dr. Stanley Warren Jr.  departed this earthly life on July 5, 2026, at the age of ninety-three years. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Charles Warren, his nephews, Herbert Parrett Jr. and Marc Warren.

He leaves to cherish his memories his son, Gavin Combs; nephews, Anthony Parrett (Anita) and Dennis Parrett (Deborah), niece, Bernice Thomas (Neal)great-nieces and nephews, D.J., DeLonna, DeShaun, Anthony, Austin, Andre, Anita, and Alicia.
