SONYA COSBY HENDERSON Obituary

Sonya Lynn Cosby-Henderson was the third of five children, born on Friday February 12, 1971, in Indianapolis, Indiana to Ernest Cosby III and Barbara Jean Cosby.

Sonya was educated in the Indianapolis Public School system attending grade school through high school, graduating from Broad Ripple High School in 1989. Sonya was a very smart and well accomplished student earning distinction as a member of the National Honor Society. Sonya was also very well-liked and respected by teachers and classmates alike known for her easy and caring personality, soft disposition, and the ability to genuinely connect and relate with every person she came in contact with.

Following high school, Sonya’s innate ability to relate and care for people led her to pursue a career in the medical field. She began studying Respiratory Therapy at Indiana University-Purdue Indianapolis (IUPUI) from 1991 to 1993 before discovering her true calling in nursing. Sonya then enrolled in the nursing program at Ivy Tech Community College earning a degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) graduating with the distinction Magna Cum Laude in 1996. 

Sonya continued her professional journey with dedication and excellence, eventually returning to Ivy Tech to earn a degree as a Registered Nurse (RN), graduating with the academic honor Cum Laude in 2004. Sonya had an extremely distinguished and honored career as a nurse spanning over 29 years with a career path that lead her to work in Pulmonary & Infections Disease, Cardiac Telemetry, Orthopedics, Pre-Operative Care, Mental Health, and as a Charge Nurse. Sonya’s caring nature, professional excellence and authentic personality earned her the respect and admiration of colleagues and patients alike.

On November 28, 2007, Sonya married Jesse Henderson. From this union came two handsome and beloved sons, Grant and Parker Henderson. Everyone who knew Sonya knows that “her boys” were the absolute love and joy of her life! Sonya absolutely doted over her children. She was an extremely devoted mother, and there was nothing she wouldn’t do in loving and caring for her children, always putting their happiness and well-being first.

In Sonya’s leisure time, she truly enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, traveling with her children and family, and most of all SHOPPING! She loved her handbags and purses!

On Tuesday July 22, 2025, Sonya peacefully earned her place in Heaven after a courageous five-month battle with brain cancer. Driven by the desire to reunite with her children; Sonya, with strength, resilience, and unwavering determination that can only be described as heroic fought her cancer tooth and nail to the last breath. Respect! Sonya was preceded in death by her Husband Jesse Henderson, Father Ernest Cosby III and Brother Eric D. Cosby.

Sonya leaves to honor and cherish her memory her sons, Grant C. Henderson and Parker M. Henderson; mother, Barbara J. Cosby; sister, Jennifer D. Cosby; brothers, Jerrold A. (Aundrea) Cosby and Ernest (Donna) Cosby IV; and a host of nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.
