Mrs. Shirley Ann “Shir-bow” Hudson (née Taylor), age 76, passed away on December 4, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on October 23, 1949, in Montgomery, Alabama, she lived a life marked by faith, purpose, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
A proud graduate of Woodson High School’s Class of 1968 in Andalusia, Alabama, Shirley’s commitment to education was a lifelong pursuit. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Business degree from Indiana University in 1997, and she continued her academic journey by earning a Master of Science degree in Education from the same institution in 2004. That same year, she received her State of Indiana Certificate of Teaching. Ever determined to grow and serve more deeply, she pursued a Master of Science degree in Psychology at Martin University, with completion anticipated in 2026.
Shirley’s professional path reflected her deep belief in the power of education and mentorship. She dedicated herself to working with youth and young adults—not only guiding them but actively building opportunities for their growth through ministry and leadership. Her work was not confined to one place, whether at the local church or on international platforms, she brought strength, vision, and intention to every endeavor. For Shirley, service was not just an act—it was a calling.
Southern-born and purpose-driven, Shirley carried her roots with pride and grace. Her home was a sanctuary filled with warmth and beauty—each room reflecting her impeccable eye for décor. She had an extraordinary gift for hospitality that extended far beyond aesthetics; it lived in the meals she prepared with love. Her legendary pound cake became a symbol of celebration and comfort among those fortunate enough to enjoy it.
An avid reader with an expansive personal library, Shirley immersed herself in literature that spanned Black history to contemporary educational theory. Her intellectual curiosity fueled her work and inspired those around her.
Shirley leaves behind a loving family who will carry forward her legacy: her devoted husband, Willie Hudson, Jr.; daughter, Michelle Cowherd (James); son, William J. Hudson; grandchildren, Damon L. Franklin, II, Jailen Hudson, Cherelle D. Franklin, and Jai-lah J. Hudson; four great-grandchildren; aunt, Verdell Taylor McDonald; sisters, Patsy Taylor Rohloff, Patricia Taylor Hayes-Hall, Vicky Taylor Pearsall, and Sharon Taylor; brothers, Leonard C. Taylor, Jr., Harold L. Taylor, Alfred G. Taylor, and Fredrick Sutton; as well as a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and extended family members. We would like to acknowledge Aunt Verdell, who raised Shirley as her own during her developmental years. Aunt Dell considered Shirley more than a niece, but as a daughter.
She now joins in eternal rest her father, Leonard C.Taylor, Sr.; mother, Fannie M, Page Taylor-Manning, and brother, Dwight Taylor.
A woman of deep faith and tireless devotion to others, Shirley Ann “Shir-bow” Hudson leaves behind a legacy rooted in service, love for learning, and fierce commitment to family and community. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her and inspiration to those who follow the path she so boldly walked.
