Sheldon James Wilkinson Sr., lovingly known as “Shel,” was born in Hammond, Indiana, to Carl and Ada Wilkinson. From a young age, Shel was a quiet and intellectual soul, often found with a book in hand. His love of learning and curiosity about the world shaped the man he became.
Shel was a proud graduate of Lew Wallace High School (Class of 1978) and went on to earn his degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University Northwest in 1987. His commitment to lifelong learning continued, and in 2016, he earned a degree in Biomedical Technology from Brown Mackie College in Indianapolis.
A man of service, Shel joined the National Guard from 1979 to 1981, receiving an Honorable Discharge as a conscientious observer. He also dedicated over a decade of his life to the East Chicago Fire Department, serving as Captain from 1984 to 1996.
In the late 1990s, Shel followed his passion for literature and culture by founding The African American Booksource in Gary’s local mall, The Village. This was a significant accomplishment born from his vision and dedication. Though now under new ownership, the bookstore remains in operation today, continuing the legacy he began.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Shel’s deepest passion was ministry. He faithfully served as an assistant pastor, offering guidance, encouragement, and faith to those in need. A gifted percussionist, Shel also used his talents to uplift worship services, creating powerful rhythms that touched the hearts of many.
Shel is survived by his children, Monica Wilkinson of McKinney, Texas Sheldon Wilkinson Jr. of Gary, Indiana, Dakari Wilkinson Savannah, Georgia, and Theophilus Wilkinson of Indianapolis, Indiana. He is also survived by his siblings Deborah Brown (Jerome) and Ricky Wilkinson, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. For the last ten years, Julia Estes has been a devoted partner and support in Shel’s life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, to Carl and Ada Wilkinson and brother, Douglass Wilkinson.
Shel’s legacy is one of warmth, laughter, and quiet strength. He had a gentle way of bringing joy to those around him, whether through his music, his words, or simply his presence. His kindness, resilience, and steady spirit will be remembered by all who had the blessing of knowing him.
Though we grieve his passing, we rejoice in the life he lived. Sheldon’s journey on earth has ended, but the impact of his kindness, wisdom, and faith will carry on in all who knew and loved him.
