SARAH JEFFERSON Obituary

Sarah L. Jefferson, 87 years old of Indianapolis passed away on May 25, 2025 at home with her family; great-niece, “little” Sara Katherine Roper; great-great-nieces, Mia’la Offett and Da’Miah Mason and great-great nephew, DeMari Mason.

Sarah was born in Clay, Mississippi on March 3, 1938 to Cobie and Willa Mae Jefferson. She was raised alongside her other 9 siblings. There was never a dull moment in the Jefferson household. Growing up Sarah went to school #56. Then, on to graduate from Arsenal Technical High School. During her younger years, Sarah loved to skate with her siblings.

Early in life Sarah knew her calling. She loved to care for others. Thus, pushing her to pursue a degree in nursing at Indiana University. Ms. Jefferson spent her years working and helping many. She was employed at Indianapolis VA Hospital where she retired. However, that did not stop her from staying busy.

Sarah did just about everything. She helped with preschool at Mount Zion, she would be involved with her church (Light of the World Christian Church), played golf at Douglass Park, enjoyed traveling, spending time with family, cooking, making picture books, brunches with friends and so much more!

Sarah was a pillar to her community and those around her. She was a shining example of how to treat and think of others, a value that was central to her character.

Sarah L. Jefferson is survived by two sisters, Ada Katherine Anderson and Dorothy Jean Shields; her brother, Reverend Doctor Edward Lewis Jefferson and wife Joy Jefferson; a host of nieces and nephews; family, friends and many more.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cobie and Willa Mae Jefferson; 6 siblings; niece Tracey Hatcher; great-niece, LaTracia Miller.

Sarah will be remembered for her beautiful smile, always being there for others and the love she shared for everyone. Her laughter will forever be missed.
