ROSCOE FIELDS Obituary

Roscoe G. Fields was born October 8, 1940, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the youngest of five and the only son born to Roscoe Fields of Lyles Station, Indiana and Lillian Lorretta Smith Fields of Columbus. OH. He went home to be with the LORD JESUS CHRIST on Tuesday, December 9, 2025. Roscoe was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Darryl Wesley Fields, and three sisters – Norma Marie Fields Smith, Marianne Fields Williams, and Vada Mae Fields Combs.

He grew up in the Indianapolis neighborhood called Martindale. He lived on Yandes Street and would commonly refer to it as ‘YANDES’ the neighborhood where mostly African Americans lived as “YANDES.”

Roscoe accepted Christ as his personal Savior when he was a boy at St. John African Methodist Episcopal  Church.

Roscoe started his intermedial education at School #26 and attended Arsenal Technical High School where he graduated in 1958.  Upon graduation from Tech, he was recruited and enlisted into the U.S. Air Force.  His recruiter told him that he would “put him on his blazing feet.”  After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, Roscoe pursued his higher education at Cal State Los Angeles where he received his bachelor’s degree in business.  He made his permanent address in the Los Angeles area after completing his college education.  He had a wide variety of work experience leading him to a strong desire to sell insurance and financial tools. He excelled in his insurance/financial career, receiving many awards for his salesmanship.

In 1977, Roscoe decided to move back to Indianapolis. Still continuing in the working field of insurance/financial.  Desiring to garner more education, he enrolled in Ball State University to pursue his Masters.

While visiting a friend’s home that had served in the Air Force with him, he was at the basketball court where he met a young boy named Steven.  (not knowing the young man would soon become his son).  Walking back to his friend’s home after playing basketball, he was introduced to Steven’s mother, Deborah “Debbie.”  Roscoe and Debbie dated for two years and were united in matrimony on May 19, 1979.   Roscoe brought two sons to the marriage, Michael Gordon and Darryl Wesley.

Right after their marriage, Roscoe and Debbie moved to Champaign/Urbana, Illinois, where he took a position with the Champaign Consortium, as CFO.  Within less than a year, Roscoe was offered a position as Assistant Director with the Champaign Urban League.  He remained in this position for two years.

Even though Champaign was only two hours from Indianapolis, he wanted to be closer to family.  An Urban League Director position became available in Marion, Indiana. Roscoe was offered the position but did not accept. Upon returning to Indianapolis, he again pursued his career in the insurance/financial field.

In 1985, Roscoe and Debbie relocated to San Francisco, CA.  Roscoe became employed with some of the top ten insurance companies in the nation.  Again, he excelled in sales and financial tools, receiving awards and honors. After a ten-year stint in San Francisco, Roscoe and Debbie returned to Indianapolis.

In 1996, the creation of Balanced Bookkeeping & Tax Service, Roscoe, and Debbie’s self-employed business offered accounting and tax services to individuals and small businesses.  This business started in the Fields’ home and because of its growth, was soon transplanted to an outside office space. The business grew to a clientele of 500 plus individuals and small businesses. The business has been established for 30 years.

Roscoe and Debbie worked side by side complementing each other’s expertise in the business.  Roscoe had a rule that they would not have any more than three disagreements per day in the business. Roscoe and Debbie were married for 46 years and living and loving life.  After starting their business together, they spent each day side by side – an opportunity they believed was made possible only through their shared faith in Jesus Christ.  Guided by faith and deep gratitude for God’s many blessings, they built a joyful life together, enriched by meaningful travel across the United States and abroad.  They delighted in sports, treasured the gift of music, and found special joy in jazz concerts and their many years attending the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana and the Black Filmmakers Awards in Oakland, California.  Throughout their journeys they embraced fellowship and unforgettable moments, including meeting admired actors, actresses, and musicians, always giving thanks for the experiences God graciously allowed them to share.

God took back what was His on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.  Roscoe leaves to honor his memory and life a loving and devoted wife, Deborah “Debbie” Louise Fields, two sons – Michael Gordon Fields,     Steven Louis Redmon (Angela), his sister, Juanita E. Hudson, his sisters-in-law, Rose Marie Jones, Iris J. Embry, Diane L. Mitchell, and Vaneice C. Steel, nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren. Roscoe is survived by a host of family and friends who loved him dearly.
