Roger completed his primary and secondary education in the Indianapolis Public School system. He attended School #87 and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School. As a teenager, Roger worked at the Indianapolis Recorder. He was drafted in the United States Army, serving from 1969 to 1971 during the Vietnam era.
