ROBERT YOUNG Obituary

Robert A. Young, Jr. was born on November 13, 1931, in Memphis, Tennessee.  He was the son of Robert A. Young, Sr. and Lucille Rankin Young.  One of two siblings, he was the younger of the two.  As a child, he professed a belief in Christ, and he was baptized at Martin Temple C.M.E. He began he primary education at LaRose Grade School in the Memphis area schools.

In 1942, he with his family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana.  He continued his education at School #17 and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in 1949.  Young Robert was industrious in nature. He began working at the American Can Company.   

In 1951, Robert heeded the call to serve in the military, and he entered active duty in the United States Air Force in 1951.  Having served in the 329th Bombardment Squadron (SAC), among the awards and commendation and awards he received were the National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.  He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1955.  He returned to Indianapolis, and resumed his employment as a millwright at American Can.  He worked for over twenty-eight years, until 1979, when the company closed. 

Under G. I. Bill, he was afforded the opportunity to continue his studies.  He attended Highland Business Institute.  He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Indiana University.  Robert embarked upon a second career as an educator in the Indianapolis Public School System at Schools #47 and #108. 

On March 21, 1954, Robert was united in Holy Matrimony with Barbara Jean Young.  They were blessed with the births of two sons, Robert “Robbie”, III and Kent.  Together in their retirement years, they traveled to many popular tourist destinations including Hawaii, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Aruba and St. Thomas.  Their marriage spanned over sixty years, until the death of his beloved wife in 2015.   

Robert was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church for many years.  He served as a Sunday School Teacher and as a member of the Brotherhood.  He was a member of the Kiwanis International and the NAACP and regularly attended meetings.  He was also an avid spectator sports fan whose favorite baseball team was the St. Louis Cardinals, and he was a diehard Notre Dame football fan.

Robert A. Young, Jr. departed this earthly life on April 11, 2025, at the age of ninety-three years and five months.

He leaves to cherish his memory his sons, Robert A. Young, III and Kent W. Young; daughter, Robin J. Young; grandson, DeWayne Young; great granddaughter, Aliyah Young, his beloved Young family in-laws, other relatives and a host of friends.
