MR. THEO HAMITER, SR. Obituary

Theo Hamiter, the son of Wardell Hamiter and Mary Gilmore Hamiter, was born April 14, 1938, in Portland, Arkansas.  He graduated from Tillis High School in Portland, Arkansas, and then attended Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical and Normal College (Arkansas AM&N), now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.  He graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a minor in Mathematics. Upon graduation, he worked in the laboratory at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, for 24 years as a Biochemist. He published research papers on the Elucidation of Amino Acids and Active Transport Mechanism, which he presented at the International Symposium on Magnesium in Montreal, Canada in 1976. In 1980, Theo completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Indiana Central University, now the University of Indianapolis. He owned and operated T. A. Hamiter Realtors as a licensed real estate broker and appraiser.  He was also the general manager at Johnson & Hamiter Trucking Company. Theo retired after working 20-plus years at FedEx.

Theo was a committed Christian and confessed his belief in Christ at an early age. He was a dedicated member of St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church for over 60 years where he served in various roles including trustee and a math/science tutor. He was a dedicated life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., serving as State Director for 12 years. Theo is the founder of the Indianapolis Alumni Chapter of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wardell (1984) and Mary Jackson Gilmore Hamiter (1950) and Wardell’s second wife Rosie Davis Johnson (2000); sisters, Carrie Johnson Welch, Ruth L. Polk (Roger), brothers,  Jack Johnson, Dr. Frank Johnson, Jr. (Loretha Clark), John L. Johnson (Delores), Harold T. Johnson Sr., Charles E. Johnson, Sr. (Mary Knapp), Robert E. Johnson, Sr. (Carolyn) (Beverly) (Felisha), John L. Hamiter (Helen Bryant), Willie R. Hamiter (Florida Mae Matheney), Shallie L. Johnson, and Jessie Smith.

Theo is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jeanetta Bailey Hamiter, children Yolanda Hamiter Lewis (Vinson), Theo A. Hamiter, Jr. (Jennifer), and Vera Hamiter Jackson (Michael); grandchildren Jana N. Lewis, Jillian M. Lewis, Michael R. Jackson III, Jasmine M. Jackson, Aubrey S. Hamiter, and Lauren S. Hamiter; brother Frank H. Hamiter, Sr., (Sandra Cavanaugh Hamiter) (Patricia Henderson); sisters Illie Smith and Truedell Moore (Jeff); Elaine Bradley Johnson, Annie Mason Johnson, and Mary Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
