Mary Lee Evans Livers was born on May 25, 1934, in Lavaca, Alabama, to the late Robert E. Evans and Chanie M. Hampton Evans. She was the second of four children born to this union. Mary and her family moved to Indianapolis when she was in the second grade. She was a member of the St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church for 40 years, where she was an active member of the Senior Usher Board and the Matrons. She later changed her membership to the Eastern Star Church where she was a member for 35 years. She was also an active member of the Senior Saints Ministry.
Mary attended Indianapolis Public School #26 and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School. After high school she was employed by the RCA Corporation until she resigned after marriage. Mary worked for the Wm. H. Block Company (Lazarus), now known as Macy's Department Store, and retired after 25 years in 1988. As part of her retirement package, Mary received a lifetime discount that she could use at Blocks, Lazarus, and Macy’s Department Stores.
On October 23, 1953, Mary was united in Holy Matrimony to Bellwood Livers. God blessed this union of 62 years with six children, 17 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren. Her steadfast belief in God, family, education, hard work, and self-reliance will continue to inspire her loved ones for generations to come.
Mary was an excellent cook and loved baking. She enjoyed going to church, family get-togethers, traveling, and listening to gospel music, but her first passion was her dedication to her large family. During her retirement years, she took immense joy in babysitting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and taking them out to eat. Mary always stressed the importance of education and being independent. She was always involved in the education of her children. Mary made it a point to meet and talk with teachers, visit their schools, and attend school meetings, programs and athletic events. She was very proud of the achievements of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary took immense pride in her six children, a group that includes four college graduates and two successful entrepreneurs.
Everyone that knew Mary, knew she had the gift of gab and could talk forever. She met no strangers. She would talk to any and everyone she met no matter the circumstances. Mary would also use her voice to speak up to ensure fairness for herself, her family, and others. Mary found her highest calling in tending to those she loved. She navigated caring for her parents, husband, and aunt with unwavering grace and a servant’s heart.
Mary departed this life on May 8, 2026 at the age of 91 years old. She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters; Vera M. Sanders, and Dorothy Ree Evans; one daughter, Stephanie J. Gardner; one son, Gregory A. Livers; one grandson James C.
