MRS. CHESSIE COLE BARBEE Obituary

Chessie Marie Barbee was born on July 17, 1938, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Janie Marie Cole and Edward Royal Cole. She was the youngest daughter and the second youngest of nine children, all of whom preceded her in death.

Chessie received her education through Indianapolis Public Schools. She professed a hope in Christ early in life and was a devoted member of Christ Missionary Baptist Church and later New Era Church.

She was first united in marriage to William Henry Smith, Sr., and together they were blessed with three sons and two daughters. Two of her sons, Richard Duane Smith, Sr., and Stephen Anthony Smith, preceded her in death. Chessie later married PJ Barbee, and from this union, she was blessed again with a daughter and a bonus son, whom she lovingly cared for after the passing of his mother.

Known affectionately as Ms. Barbee, she welcomed all friends of her children into her home with warmth and generosity. Chessie was passionate about cooking, with her sweet potato pies becoming a family favorite. She loved playing cards—especially Bid Whist, Dad, and Coon. She was also an avid Indiana Pacers fan who never missed a televised game. In her quieter moments, she enjoyed working puzzles, caring for her plants, and watching her favorite game shows—Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune. With her wit, humor, and storytelling, many said she missed her true calling as a comedian.

Chessie dedicated over 30 years of service to RCA before working at Embassy Suites North and later retiring from Target Warehouse.

On August 25, 2025, at the age of eighty-seven years, one month, and eight days, Ms. Chessie Marie Cole Barbee peacefully transitioned from this life to her eternal rest.

She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Chester Smith; three daughters, Joyce M. Footman, Janet L. Jackson, and Teryna L. Van Cleave (Donald); one bonus son, Anthony T. Barbee (Joann); 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
