MRS. ALTER COLLINS Obituary

A virtuous woman is characterized by strength, wisdom, kindness, and an unwavering faith in God. She is not afraid to stand alone in truth. Her strength comes from her faith and values, leading her to make wise decisions. The Bible shares various attributes that define her, guiding us in our admiration and understanding of women who embody these values. Alter L. Collins was a virtuous woman.

Alter L. Collins began her journey on April 30, 1937, in Alabama. What many don’t know is that she was the third of three babies Albert and Mary Hardnett were blessed with. Her two brothers, unfortunately not as strong as she was, were called home to be with the Lord before they could meet their parents. But Alter was determined, and resilient from the very beginning and God allowed her to stay and grow up under the love and care of her earthly parents. Her father, Albert, was thrilled to have a daughter who looked just like him, so he named her after himself, and that’s where the name “Alter” came from. Albert and Mary gave their daughter everything she wanted and more. When Alter was still young, her father decided to move the family to the city, and they relocated to Indianapolis.

Back in those days, it was common for a couple families to share a home, even without knowing one another. Each family had its own bedroom, but they shared one bathroom. Those were the humble beginnings that shaped Alter’s spirit of community and kindness. The family eventually moved and settled on Northwestern Avenue. It was there Alter met a handsome young man next door who had returned from the Army to be with his parents. They saw each other, fell in love, and were married.

Alter was blessed with three children, whom she loved deeply. Her eldest, Kenny, held a very special place in her heart. He was truly her “momma’s boy.” Then came Michele, affectionately known as “Neesy,” her only daughter. Their bond was unique and special. Finally, Kevin, the baby of the family, who was, without question, her “Baby Boy” and lovingly spoiled. Alter’s love didn’t stop with her children. She was deeply proud of her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She lit up whenever any of them were around. Although her first grandson was called home too soon, she cherished the moments she had with him.

Alter attended a few grade schools in Indianapolis and was a proud alumni of Crispus Attucks High School. A lifelong learner, she also took courses in Accounting, Fair Housing, Insurance Studies, and Computer Education. She also earned her certification in HUD. Over the years, Alter held many meaningful and diverse roles. She began her career at the Finance Center, where she earned recognition from the Department of the Army for her outstanding work. She later worked in insurance and the construction industry as a secretary, and also in housing management. She even served as a church secretary at Salem Lutheran Church. Her final job was at Kroger, where she worked in the Deli. At age 80, she decided to retire, saying, “I’m tired and I just want to be at home.”

Alter was deeply involved in her faith and church communities. A devoted member of Bethel A.M.E. Church for many years, she served faithfully as a Steward, Children’s Choir Director, April Birthday Club member, and other auxiliaries. She was also active at Robinson Community serving there as a Steward as well. Alter served on several community organizations including working with her youngest son Kevin with his Non-For-Profit GP Ministries and BRL Community Choir. Her final church home was New Beginnings, where she served faithfully until her health no longer allowed her to attend.

Alter L. Collins was known by her friends and extended family as: Alter, Al, Ms. Collins, Ms. Wells, and Ms. Alter. But the names that meant the most to her were “Momma,” “Ma,” “Mommy,” and “Mother,” lovingly spoken by her children: Kenny Eugene Wells Sr., Michele D, Wells (Neesy), and Kevin H. Wells. Her grandchildren knew her as “Grandma” or “Grandma Wells,” a title she wore with great pride from the oldest to the youngest of her great-great-grandchildren.

Our Mother was our first friend, our Best Friend and our Forever Friend. She was our matriarch, a strong, faithful, and deeply loved woman of God. When we look at our Mother, we see the purest love we’ve ever known. God, we Thank You for Blessing Us with our Queen, Momma, Mommy, and Mother Alter L. Collins!
