Roosevelt Hickman was born on December 23, 1937, in Bishopville, South Carolina. Mr. Roosevelt Hickman graduated from Butler High School in Hartsville, South Carolina.
After graduation, Roosevelt moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1958, where he resided with his eldest sister, Dorothy, and her family. Roosevelt met and married Nancy Kirby in 1961. To this union they were blessed with four children, Ronald, Randy, Robin and Ramona.
Roosevelt later, in1986, met JoAnn Jackson on a blind date for breakfast at Bob Evans restaurant arranged by a mutual friend, the late Earlene Rowan-Jones. They dated for six months, and the rest is history. Roosevelt and JoAnn united in marriage on May 26, 1987. After their marriage at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, Roosevelt joined Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, which was under the direction of Rev. Leonard N. Williams at that time. He served on the Trustee Board, as Head Usher, President, and he also worked as the custodian and took great care of his church. He was a true servant of God for thirty-eight years at Allen Chapel.
Roosevelt was employed by Allison Engine/Rolls Royce and completed thirty-one esteemed years of service.
Roosevelt was an avid softball player who loved the game! Roosevelt enjoyed traveling, playing in “Over 80” weekly softball leagues and tournaments. Roosevelt, JoAnn and their late friend, Yvonne Duncan, along with other family and friends enjoyed traveling with great delight to Las Vegas every year along with celebrating birthdays and anniversaries. Other highlights for these three friends were decorating the church for the holidays and various events for the church.
Roosevelt also looked forward to and enjoyed taking his family to attend the Hickman/Cain Family Reunions in the various locations which included South Carolina, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Maryland, and Patterson, New Jersey just to name a few.
Roosevelt Hickman departed this earthly life on December 4, 2025, at the age of eighty-seven years. He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Codell and Guilford (June) Hickman.
Roosevelt leaves to cherish his devoted wife, JoAnn Hickman; sons, Ronald Hickman and Randy Hickman; daughters, Robin (Anthony) Walls, and Ramona Hickman; stepsons, Darrell Brooks and Brian (Debra) Jackson of Glendale, Arizona; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren; siblings, Robert “Rob” Hickman of Hartsville, South Carolina, Dorothy Muldrow, Janie Sears, Frances Crawford, Johnnie Johnson, and Patsy Hickman of Washington, D.C., and nieces and nephews, friends and the Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church family.
