MR. KERMIT "THE GOVERNOR" DUREN Obituary

Kermit Elmus Duren was born to Thomas and Luetena McDaniel-Duren on August 1, 1930 in Carrollton, Mississippi.  He was the fourth of seven children born to this union.  His parents preceded him in death along with his sisters, Luerena Bennett and Annie Rae Ewing; brother, Thomas Coleman Duren; two sisters, sisters-in-laws, Ora Lee Purnell and Helen Gaddis; six brothers-in-laws, Floyd Bennett, Arthur Kelley, Harold Smith, Floyd Purnell, Gene Joyner and Willie Roy Foreman.

Kermit completed the eighth grade in Winona, Mississippi.  He met and was united in Holy Matrimony to Georgia Lee Adair in 1951, and to this union four daughters were born.

Kermit enlisted in the Army of the United States in November of 1951 and received an honorable discharge as PVT2 -PFC in November of 1953.  In 1955, the family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana where Kermit made a home for his family.

Kermit was employed at the Paper Stock Company as a factory worker in 1955.  Then in 1966 he was employed by Detroit Diesel Allison Transmission as a transmission lineman and became a Foreman at Plant 14 until he retired in 1992.  Kermit was certified as a Licensed Mechanic in the State of Indiana and received his official license on November 13, 1970.

Kermit accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at New Horizon Ministries under the leadership of Pastor Allen Ray Bolton.  He continued his walk with the Lord and united with New Light Missionary Baptist church under the leadership of Pastor Calvin Allen Jr., and continued as a member under the leadership of Pastor Paul Love until the Lord called Kermit home.

Kermit was an avid cook, gardener, mechanic, and he was the “king” on the grill.  He enjoyed walking, riding his bike, dancing, and playing horseshoes.  He loved to work on cars such as; rebuild engines and motors.  He also loved to travel and spend time with his family.

Kermit departed this life on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 with the support of the hospice staff at Methodist Hospital and his loving family.

He 1eaves to cherish his memories, daughters, Linda (Keith Sr.), Walker, Doris Duren, Carol Diane Rogers and Shirley Ann Duren; son, Robert Merrell Duren; sisters, Johnnie Mae Foreman and Inell Joyner; brother, Terry Dean Duren and two half-sisters and four half-brothers; son-in-law, Keith Walker, Sr.; sisters-in-laws, Ruby Lee Kelley and Jean Smith; brother-in-law, Ezell Gadis, Sr,; grandchildren, Michelle (John) Furr, Tamara (WiIliam) Duren-Harris, Keith Walker Jr., Michael Rogers, Dorian Duren, Shawn Duren, Whitney Woods, Danyell Matthews and Robert Taylor; twenty great­grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, friends and the New Light Church Family.

Thanks to his special friends, Melvin Thomas, Mack Gadis, Larry Covington, George Davenport, Jimmy Moss, and Tony (Amp) Thomas.
