MR. GREGORY MILLS Obituary

Gregory Anthony Mills, 59, was born in Plattsburgh, New York on February 14, 1962, to TSgt Warner and Shirley Mills, the fifth of six children.  They loved him dearly.  His father was also his coach during his early years in sports.  His mother cheered him on from the bleachers and provided spiritual guidance throughout his life.

Gregory spent his early years in Madrid, Spain before moving to Indiana where he attended grade school through college. Gregory was a star athlete while attending Kokomo High school where he was nicknamed “The General” and was a two time recipient of the “Gold Helmet” award. He attended Indiana Central College (now Uindy) on a football scholarship. His  athletic abilities spanned several additional sports including baseball, basketball, track and later in life, golf.  Gregory was a sports connoisseur as his favorite football team was the Pittsburg Steelers and his favorite baseball team was the Chicago Cubs. Later in life, he was on a mission to visit every professional baseball park in America.

In addition to sports, Gregory enjoyed playing cards with his siblings…especially when he was winning and, yes, the competition was ferocious! In recent years, he really enjoyed the annual Mills Siblings’ Retreat in Savannah, GA

He received his undergraduate degree and MBA from University of Indianapolis.  Gregory was a salesman for many Indianapolis businesses throughout his working career.

Gregory married Shelley Ziliak September 16, 1989 and from that union came his pride and joy daughters Ashlee Briana and Gabriella Marie.  The girls and Shelley encircled Gregory with love during his life and through several health challenges encouraging him in hope, strength, and perseverance.

Despite several health setbacks, Gregory was a faithful attendee to Ashlee’s many choir concerts, state solo competitions, theater performances and Gabriella’s basketball, soccer, and volleyball games as a true and steadfast booster and supporter. He additionally coached his daughter Gabriella in basketball for a season, just like his father coached him! His children meant the world to him, and they were with him to the very end, even until his last breath.

Gregory enjoyed coaching football at New Augusta North Middle School, live music concerts, ballroom dancing, singing, going to the beach, hanging out with his lifelong friends, joking around, and traveling. His most cherished travel adventures were with his beloved daughters and former wife, Shelley, to Sanibel Island, FL and Disney World.

Gregory was predeceased by his father TSgt Warner Mills. Left to cherish his memories are his mother Shirley Mills; and daughters Ashlee Mills-Liller (Cory) and Gabriella Mills (fiancé Matthew); his ex-wife and dear friend Shelley Ziliak-Mills; his siblings Carol Dockett-Hood (Felton), Michael Mills (Reesa); Shelley Mills-Brinkley (Ray); Alan Mills (Sally); Robin Cox; his beloved 1st cousin James Mills (Roby); a special uncle, Talmadge Rhodes and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins.
