Brooks E. Cunningham was born on September 9, 1941, to Bernice Pargon Cunningham and King Cunningham. He attended Indianapolis public schools for grade school, and graduated in May of 1961 from Arsenal Technical High School. At Tech, he was a proud member of the Founders Club and the Service Club..
In August 1961, Brooks enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and faithfully served his country with valor for three years. During his time in the military, he was a Combat Engineer, demonstrating dedication, strength, and discipline.
Brooks began his faith journey at Bethesda Temple Apostolic Church in the 1960’s and remained grounded in his faith throughout his life. He was often seen reading and listening to the Bible and listening to gospel music. He drew strength and guidance from his beliefs.
In 1964, Brooks attended the Indiana School of Mortuary Science, embarking upon a career in the mortuary profession. In 1965, he married and was blessed with six children, whom he loved dearly.
Brooks was first employed at Jacobs Brothers Funeral Chapel. He later dedicated over three decades of service to Stuart Mortuary working there from 1976 until his retirement in 2009. After retiring, he enjoyed spending quality time with his family. He loved taking road trips, grocery shopping, watching movies, attending church, and going out to eat.
Brooks was a man of his word—when he spoke, he meant business. He carried himself with integrity, strength, and love for his family. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished. Brooks was a devoted son, brother, uncle, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.
Brooks E. Cunningham departed this earthly life February 6, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael Cunningham; daughter, Kimberly Cunninngham, and three brothers, Bruce Cunningham, Olin Cunningham and Roy Cunningham.
He leaves to cherish his memories his children, Cynthia Cunningham, Brooks E. Cunningham, II, Stephanie Pickens, and Kristine Cunningham; grandchildren, Courtney Cunningham, Adrian Parson, Chareese Phelps, and Brandie Parrish; great-grandchildren, Genisis Brown, Jeniah Brown, Ser’ Mauria Stewart, Bryan Phelps, Chree Cunningham, Mark Knox, Jr. , Tre Phelps, Avery Moss, and Terry Newton, and a host of other relatives and friends.
