Michael Andrew Mitchell was born on September 4, 1958, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to William C. and Cora L. Mitchell.
Michael professed his love for the Lord and was baptized at an early age at Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church. At an early age, Michael knew everything there was to know about both sides of his family, and for that reason, his family knew him as The Rock. He graduated from North Central High School, where he was involved in the Black Student Union, Fine Arts Festival, orchestra, and concert band. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Tennessee State University and his Associate of Arts degree from the University of Indianapolis.
For over 50 years, Michael was one of the most faithful members of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses (NCGCC). For several years Michael served on the registration board, where he helped keep the chapter running smoothly and efficiently. In addition, he kept records and archives for the NCGCC. He believed in order and following the rules and was very knowledgeable of the laws, rules, and regulations of the NCGCC. Michael had no problem standing up when rules were not being followed. Over the years, he became the president of the Greater Indianapolis Choral Chapter. As president, Michael hosted two National Board Meetings and more than four Mid-West Regional Conferences. Hosting board meetings and conferences was no easy task, but Michael did it well and made it look easy. Members of the NCGCC called Michael The King of Hospitality. He always ensured that the members were comfortable, well fed, and happy. Michael was a man of his word, and he completed every task to the best of his abilities. Michael gave his whole heart to the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses, and he will truly be missed.
If you knew Michael, you knew that his blood truly ran blue. In fact, he prided himself in having been an active member of the Tennessee State University Greater Indianapolis Alumni Chapter for over 40 years. Michael's life was a testament that he believed in the TSU motto- Think, Work, and Serve, as he was a faithful member who served countless hours in various capacities of the chapter. He was mostly known for his diligent efforts on the fundraiser committee. He was very instrumental in helping to plan and organize bus trips and silent auctions for the galas and regional conferences, which were always a huge success. Michael attended numerous Mid-West Regional and National Alumni Conferences over the years.
He also served proudly on the Indianapolis Black Alumni Council as a member and representative for the TSU Indy Alumni Chapter. Michael was always willing to help out whenever and wherever needed and remained a faithful member of the chapter until the end. He was admired by many and known as the chauffeur of the chapter as he took great pride in providing transportation for the seasoned alumni and making sure they had rides to and from chapter meetings and events. He will be greatly missed.
Michael was known as The Rock to some and The King of Hospitality to others. Michael was a friend, supporter, protector, and leader. He loved to travel, cook, and bake. He never met a stranger, and he lived his life to the fullest. Michael was loved by so many, and he will truly be missed.
Michael Andrew Mitchell departed this life to be with his Heavenly Father on November 5, 2021. Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Cora L. Mitchell; father, William C. Mitchell, and brother, Thomas C. Mitchell.
Michael leaves to cherish his memory with his brother, Marvin L. Mitchell (Angela); nephews, Ryan C. Mitchell, Marvea' L. Mitchell, William T. Mitchell, Dr. Marlon A. Moss, Jr., Daniel P.
