Deacon Lige William Mixon was born on January 17, 1950, in Jackson, Mississippi to Charles William and Ida Lee Mixon. Lige was affectionately known as Mickey, Uncle Mickey, Coach Mixon, Poppy and Deacon Mixon.
While he was born in Mississippi and claimed it as “home,” around the age of two, he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana with his grandmother, Ida Mae Handy, where he would eventually be joined by his mother and stepfather Eugene Liggins and his brother Andre Liggins. He resided in Indy for the remainder of his life, returning to Mississippi often as a child and young man to visit family. He completed his education at St. Patrick Catholic School and Harry E. Wood High School. He enjoyed many leisure days with his Southside friends and community at the Concord Resource & Activity Center and Michael Street Park. He served as an altar boy at St. John Catholic Church.
He developed two loves as a Wood High School Wood Chuck – athletics (football, basketball, baseball) and the love of his life, his sweetheart, Jennifer (Jenny) Kay Hall. Lige and Jenny dated throughout high school and after three marriage proposals would affirm their love for each other through Holy Matrimony, September 14, 1968. He continued to affirm his love for over 56 years by signing every anniversary card, “To Love, From Love, With Love.” Their marriage and love were blessed with three sons, William L., Jarrett C., and Andre P., of whom he was extremely proud.
Lige was known for his mild demeanor, persuasive charm and gracious attitude toward others, believing, “that you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.” He encouraged his sons to study and work hard in school, to love and protect family, and to value and appreciate others. He studied barbering in high school and upon graduating, worked as a barber at Moore’s Barbershop before becoming a letter carrier. He retired from the United States Postal Service after a 42-year career. He trained and mentored young new hires at the US postal service and played on the company softball team. Lige also mentored the youth for decades through coaching in various sports (football, basketball, and baseball) and leagues in the city of Indianapolis.
While he was christened as a child and was raised in the Catholic Church, Lige formally recommitted his life to Christ as a young man in the 1980’s through both confession and baptism. He later became an Ordained Deacon, serving at Westlane Christian Church and then Progressive MBC. He would eventually attend two church services every Sunday, one at PMBC and one at New Era Baptist with his wife and children. Additionally, for 13 years, he pursued biblical knowledge and growth with the Bible Study Fellowship International Organization.
Lige and Jenny lived life to the fullest and enjoyed traveling all over the world. During his life he visited Europe, Central and South America, and cruised in the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. He enjoyed Southern cooking, horseback riding, swimming, fishing, camping, mowing his lawn, and his Mercedes-Benz CLK430 convertible which was only driven on special occasions.
Lige departed this life to be with the ancestors and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, July 13, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents. He leaves the following to cherish his memory and to honor his legacy his wife, Jennifer K Mixon; sons, William (Lela, wife and their children Lauren, William C, Miles), Jarrett (Heidi, wife and their children Meikayla, Sidney, Latavia) and Andre (Keri, wife and their children Ava, Aidan, Ashton); brother: Andre Liggins; niece: Aundria Holman (Jaron, husband); and a host of relatives, in-laws, adopted family, and friends.
