Lee Henry Chandler, affectionately known as “Manson” or “L.H.,” was born on December 31, 1936, in West Point, Mississippi, to the late Henderson “Willie” Chandler Sr. and Cerula Chandler.
At the age of seventeen, Lee moved to Indiana, where he began what would become a lifelong career at Inland Steel. He worked in the Machine Shop as a crane operator from December 27, 1968, until January 1, 1999. His journey was marked by determination and resilience. After experiencing an early setback in his employment, Lee was rehired—an experience that became a true testament to his perseverance and strong work ethic. He dedicated more than 30 years of service to Inland Steel and proudly retired in 1999.
Lee peacefully transitioned from this life on April 5, 2026, at the age of eighty-nine, leaving behind a legacy of strength, perseverance, and unwavering love for his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Cerula Chandler; his siblings, Emma Hopson, Mary Landon, Alvernia Walker, Henderson Chandler, Clifton Chandler, Calimel Chandler, and Willie Dee Addison; and his grandson, Jerome Johnson.
Lee will be remembered as a man of quiet strength, humility, perseverance, and deep devotion to his family. His life reflected integrity, hard work, and faith, and his memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
Lee was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Irene Chandler, whom he married on December 29, 1989. He was a proud father to his daughters, Corliss Chandler and Patricia Johnson, and a cherished grandfather to: Desirae Woods, Rodney (Carmelita) Woods, Quentin Woods, Je’Keil Hill, Ty’Reek Hill, and Markeon Ellis.
He was also a loving great-grandfather to Zy’Raiyah Taylor, Zyan Taylor, Cameron Chandler, Rodney Woods III, Arriona Woods, Laila Woods, Josiah Ellis, My'Lea Hill, and Ty'Reek Hill Jr.; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
