KATHERINE BATES Obituary

Sketch of Life

Minister Katherine Martin Bates, daughter of Isaiah Martin and Jeanette Goodall Martin, was born December 19th, 1948. She was the eldest of five children. Both parents and sister Joyce Martin proceed her in death.

Katherine accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized. She attended Indianapolis Public Schools. She graduated Arsenal Technical High School. Later she attended and graduated Ivy Tech College with a Nursing degree.

She united in Holy Matrimony to Louis Bates Jr. on April 2nd, 1966. To this union one daughter was born, Lisa Ann. Katherine had a passion for caring for others. She worked for Wishard Memorial Hospital for 39 years before retiring. After retirement, Katherine joined BNA– Black Nurses Association. She had been President for several years. In this organization, she had opportunities to go out into the community to teach & share preventative care methods for Blood Pressures, Covid, and HIV.

She loved helping people. Katherine joined Bethany Missionary Baptist Church for around 17 years. She taught Sunday School, sang in choir, VBS, and Matrons ministry. She then came to Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church. She has been a faithful member for about 40+ years. She has worked with Sunday School teaching, Bible Study teachings, Choir member (Secretary & Chaplin), Nurses President, Hospital Ministry, and Minister. She loved Church! Attending, studying, fellowshipping, sharing God’s word everywhere. She attended Church of First-Born Saints after worship and cultivated friendships there too.

To know her was to love her. She loved people. She never let the grass grow under her feet— always on the go. Weekly shopping with her sisters–taking care of business. She was our Fashionista and Renaissance woman. She loved God and loved her family & friends. She was done up from head to toe. She was our prayer warrior, Betty Crocker, Cheerleader, medicine explainer, voice of reason, and so much more. When life takes you down she would remind you that you can move that toe. She spent Sunday afternoons with her companion & friends. Definite encourager. Favorite pastimes: movies, music, and great food.

Minister Katherine Martin Bates, departed this life on March 27th, 2024 at 75 years old, 3 months, and 8 days after a brief illness. She leaves to cherish her memory: daughter Lisa Ann, two grandchildren: Vaughn J. Gray & Tatyana G. Gray, two sisters: Faye Martin & Elaine Martin, one brother: Harold Martin (Gloria); Special Companion, Edward Hopkins, a host of nieces and nephews, other family, friends, and Church family.
