Her Story

Karen Dennyse Reid was born on July 29, 1959, in Gary, Indiana. She had an unwavering faith in God, showed a deep love and dedication to her family, and was a passionate social worker committed to serving her clients and community. Karen departed from this world on March 27, 2024 at the young age of sixty-four years of age in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Karen’s early childhood was spent in Gary on Twenty-fifth and Cleveland streets. She was the eldest of two children born to her mother the late Joyce Reid; a woman who served in the Air Force and was a talented soprano who sang with many opera companies and churches. Together, Karen’s mother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins cared, nurtured, and protected her. Her childhood was full of unforgettable memories. A love of God, prayer, gospel music, and community were instilled in her in those early years and anchored her throughout life. Her childhood helped build the foundation inside her heart.

Karen was the essence of resilience and relentless perseverance. She always said, “Have a great day. Fill it with positive energy. And stay strong.”  As a single mother of five children, she worked as a bartender for over twenty years serving VIP clients and celebrities, navigating through life’s challenges, and fighting to make a better life for her family. Surviving through the hardships, tragedies, and losses made her stronger and even more confident in God’s Grace through faith. Karen graduated at the top of her class at Indiana University Indianapolis, earning her Master of Social Work in 2009. As a social worker she was compassionate and advocated for her patients; collaborating with psychiatrist, psychologist, and clinicians across Indianapolis to help women, veterans, and ex-offenders. She retired as a clinical social worker at Ascension St Vincent. Karen had a love for helping all people. She was known as a great woman and close friend to many of her colleagues.

Karen was never away from loved ones, family members, and friends. She made you feel special, and her warmness made anyone feel like they were at home. She enjoyed reading, writing, art, poetry, music, traveling, comedy, and, most of all, getting together with her kids and grandchildren on every possible occasion. She took every chance to celebrate and support her family and friends. Karen is beloved by too many people to name. We will miss her infectious smile and her saying “Holy Moly!” She will mostly be remembered for these precious moments and the many journeys between the significant accomplishments in her life. Her spirit and name will live through her loved ones.

Karen is predeceased by her son, Jason Reid; her mother, Joyce Reid, and her brother, Kevin Coleman.

Karen is survived by her children, Alexis Reid Okoli, Milton Reid, Brittany Mitrani, and Paris Reid of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Taylor, Alexandria, Jamila, Deryana, Yvonne, Jamie, Jazmin, Jeremiah, Milton Jr, Jason, HaKing, Nasir, and Nouri; and great-grandchildren, Aniyah, DJ, Braydon, Brielle, Maelani, TJ, Zander, Lil Milton, Journey, and Jalani.
