Jeannette Burks Pettigrew was born on January 24, 1951, in Lena, Mississippi, to the union of Vetley Burks and Era Lee Johnson Burks. She was raised in Mississippi and received her early education in the Mississippi School System, proudly attending Woods High School.
In time, Jeannette relocated with her family to Indianapolis, Indiana, where she began her career with Mayflower Trucking Company. Later, she transitioned into a fulfilling role as a property manager, where she continued to serve others with care and commitment.
At an early age, Jeannette accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She initially worshipped with her family at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Arthur Johnson. In later years, she united with City of Refuge Christian Church, where she found joy worshipping alongside her daughter and grandchildren.
Jeannette was a woman of quiet grace and unwavering generosity. Her love for her family was limitless—if she had it, you had it. Her life was marked by gratitude, which she expressed through selfless acts of kindness. She especially enjoyed fishing and cooking, often bringing her family together through food and fellowship.
On Thursday, June 5, 2025, at the age of 74, Jeannette traded her labor for her eternal reward. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Willie C. Ealy, Lester Johnson, Mack Stowers, and Clifford Johnson; and sisters, Annie Louise Holifield and Bertha O. Burks.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory loving daughters, Annette Clinton and LaKneisha Rynai Collins; sisters, Mary Johnson, Diana Moss, Cathy Brooks, and Juanita Young; grandchildren, Darrell L. Collins, Damon L. Collins, DeJuan L. Collins, Jada M. Collins, Judah L. Collins; great grandchildren, Darrell L. Collins, Jr., Lyric Collins, Dayon Collins, Da’Mari Collins, and Londyn Collins; significant other, Louis Hackley and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends who were all touched by her life and legacy.
