A Brief Sketch of Life
Janice Hazel Peake Bates was born in Fleming, Kentucky on March 19, 1949 to Clarence W. and Joyce L. Mosby Peake. She came to know Jesus as her personal Lord and savior as a young girl at Corinth Baptist Church in Fleming and continued her Christian walk at Zion Hope Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. Janice was a graduate of Fleming-Neon High School and moved to Indianapolis, Indiana shortly after. She worked at Methodist Hospital for a short time, and later enrolled at John Robert Powers Modeling and Finishing School.
In 1980 Janice met James H. Bates, Jr., and they were married a year later. They were united in Holy Matrimony on August 22, 1981. They enjoyed a beautiful life of marital contentment and bliss for twenty years until his death in 2001.
Janice was employed by the United States Postal Service for over 30 years. She was awarded a certificate of appreciation and a service pin for 32 years of Federal Service. Her civic engagement includes membership in the Eagle Club and National Council of Negro Women.
Janice had a flare for interior decorating and fashion. She also enjoyed reading, sewing and collecting dated teddy bears and angels. She also believed in giving back to various charities through donations. She was an avid traveler and enjoyed visiting new places and experiencing different cultures. Janice’s heart of compassion was most notable in her loving care for her faithful companion, Ling Ling.
Janice departed this life on Friday, May 12, 2023 surrounded by her siblings and loved ones at home at the age of seventy-four years, one month, and twenty-three days. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence W. and Joyce L. Mosby Peake, one sister, Patricia Clark, and two brothers, Clarence C. Peake and Gary Peake.
Janice leaves to cherish her memory three sisters, Cardell Peake, Marian Peake, and Edith (Muncie) Rogers; one brother, Pastor Steve (Rosa) Peake; an aunt, Margaret Connor; Sister-in-laws Diane Peake, Bettie Peake, Anna Cunningham, and Mary Freeman; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and cherished friends.
Though no words or songs can adequately encompass the void of Janice’s absence, the image of her bright smile and the warmth of her generous spirit will remain in our hearts and memories until we meet again.
