James Edward Trotter Sr. was born September 1, 1958 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was one of eight children born to parents Thomas P. Trotter and Lula Mae Kent Trotter. He was a beloved member of the community.
James attended Indianapolis Public Schools and was a proud graduate of Arsenal Technical High School in 1977. From early on, James was a huge sports fan. He especially loved running track and playing basketball. You’d often find him “coaching” his children, nieces and nephews in any and every sport they played. He also enjoyed spending time fishing and engaging in conversations with anyone willing to listen. Most of all, James truly loved spending quality time with family. He was there for everything from family gatherings, birthdays and cookouts. His all-time favorite thing to do was go on family vacations to Florida.
James accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at an early age and was a member of Friends of Jesus Christ Missionary Baptist Church at the time of his passing. His faith in Christ gave him comfort and hope throughout his life.
James had a strong work ethic. He was a dedicated employee of Grocery Supply for more than 30 years before finally retiring.
James departed on May 2, 2025. James was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas P. Trotter Sr. and Lula Mae Trotter; his brother, Thomas P. Trotter Jr., and his son, James Edward Trotter Jr.
He is survived by daughters, Shannon Trotter, Shameka Hollonquest (Chris), and Nicole Trotter (Jermaine); grandchildren, Lauren Trotter, Jermaine Johnson Jr., Donte Collins, Davin Collins, Jersi Johnson, and Skylar Rodriguez; great-grandchildren, Layla Trotter, Ariyah Johnson, and Niomi Collins; siblings, Eva Green, Betty Emerson (Cornelius), Lester Trotter (Linda), Geneva Trotter-Campbell, Michael Trotter (Gloria), and Janice Trotter (Michael Duke). James also leaves behind his life-long partner, Patti Jolliffe.
As a father, friend and member of the community, James’ warm personality and unwavering kindness left a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His community will remember him for his generosity and willingness to always lend a helping hand. His presence will be deeply missed. He leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
In the fond memories we hold of James, let us find comfort and solace during this difficult time. May he rest in peace knowing he was deeply loved and will be forever remembered.
