ISABELLA JOHNSON Obituary

Isabella TURNER JOHNSON was born on April 8, 1948 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was the sixth of eight children born to Mr. Durant and Mrs. Catherine Turner. She began her education at Indianapolis Public School #63 and went on to graduate from Crispus Attucks High School. After spending time living in Okinawa, Japan and Fayetteville, North Carolina, she returned to her hometown of Indianapolis.

She was a devoted mother to her children and could always be counted on to help a friend or family member in need.  Isabella accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and always put God first in her life. A lifelong member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Isabella was an active member of the Usher Board and the Senior Ministry.

Affectionately known as “Boneface,” she truly loved children of all ages and would play with them until she wore herself out. Isabella was always the life of the party and kept everyone laughing. She also loved to dance and expressed her artistic interests through her successful floral business. Cooking for friends and family was always a passion of hers – her fried chicken and liver & onions were the stuff of legend.

Isabella Turner Johnson departed this life on Sunday, January 2, 2022 at Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Durant and Mrs. Catherine Turner; her brothers Rev. Joseph Turner and Donald “Duck” Turner; and her sister Geraldine “Gerri” Russell (Martin). She leaves to cherish her loving memory her companion, Mr. Bobby Wilcher; children Dionne Word and Hank Johnson (Curtis Ross); siblings Rev. Charles Turner (Annie Ruth), Lorine DeBow, Mary Catherine Turner, Barbara Hackett, sister-in-law Audrey Turner, God-daughter Monique Nicholson, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
