Herman Lincoln Maxey Sr. was born on February 12, 1940, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He peacefully departed this life on March 11, 2026, at the age of 86 years and 27 days. He was the beloved son of the late Herman L. Maxey and Thelma Jones Maxey, and one of twelve children born to their union.
At an early age, Herman accepted Christ and was baptized at St. Paul A.M.E. Church. He received his education in the Indianapolis Public School system and graduated with honors from the historic Crispus Attucks High School, where he excelled in football and baseball.
Shortly after graduation, Herman married his high school sweetheart, Dora Lee Ransom. Eight children were born from their union. In 1975, Herman met his beloved late wife, Frieda Parson, and the two were united in marriage on May 16, 1988. For more than four decades, they shared a loving relationship and were avid game show watchers, bowlers, card players, and horse racing enthusiasts.
Herman was a man of exceptional work ethic and unwavering dedication. He spent 40 years employed at Chrysler, where his loyalty and commitment reflected his deep sense of responsibility as a provider for his large family. Even after retirement, Herman remained active and purposeful. In his later years, he became a man on a mission—faithfully driving friends and family to appointments, running errands, and offering help wherever it was needed. The hands that once helped build vehicles were now used to guide them in service to others.
In addition to his parents, Herman was preceded in death by his wife, Frieda Maxey; stepdaughter, Terry Hendrickson; sisters, Irene Shannon, Mildred Martin, and JoAnn Reed; and brothers, Donald Maxey and Thomas Maxey.
He leaves to cherish his memory his children: Herman Maxey Jr., Tonia Maxey Williams, Vance Maxey (Lea), India Beverly (Michael), Keith Maxey, Kevin Maxey, Sherri Chapman (Tyrone), Troy Maxey (Angela), and Lisa Maxey; and his devoted stepdaughter, Sherri Ross (Anthony), whom he loved as his own; his siblings Phyllis Hill (Carl), Kenneth Maxey, Rev. Kay Crombaugh, and Aaron Maxey; special companion, Brenda Rhoades; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
