HENRY MADDOX, JR. Obituary

Henry Eugene Maddox, Jr. was born June 8, 1956, to Henry Eugene Maddox, Sr. and Charlotte Dean (Rogers) Maddox, in Indianapolis, Indiana.  He was the second of four children.

Henry confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized. He was a member at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church.  He later joined Eastern Star Church, where he was a devoted member. He served with the Children’s Church and the Barnabus Ministries. He also participated in several of the other organizations at Eastern Star Church.

Henry completed his early education at IPS #86 and graduated from Shortridge High School in 1974.  After high school he attended Indiana University, then later enlisted in U. S. Army, where served honorably for over seven years and achieved the rank of Specialist Five (SP5). He trained as a Medical Specialist (91B20) and Operating Room Technician (91D20), graduating from two intensive military medical programs at Fort Sam Houston.  Stationed at 42nd Field Hospital at Fort Knox, Henry distinguished himself through his dedication, knowledge, and skill in the surgical field.  For his meritorious service he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, and the Humanitarian Service Medal. He also earned marksmanship badges for the M-16 rifle and hand grenade.  Henry’s Honorable Discharge reflects a legacy of duty discipline and compassion –hallmarks of his service during the post-Vietnam era.

Henry embarked upon his civilian employment with St. Vincent Hospital for more than 39 years after leaving the military. He worked for 25 years as a Certified Surgical Technologist in the operating room using the same skills he had trained for in the military. After leaving the Operating Room, he was the liaison between the Operating Room and the Surgical Sterilization Productive (SSP) Department. He then was certified as a Registered Central Service Technician where he was a team leader of the SSP Department, and he was promoted to supervisor of that department. During that time, he attended Martin University and received his bachelor degree.

Henry was passionate about sports and especially fond of the Indianapolis Colts and the Indiana Pacers. He was a die-hard fan of both teams whether they were winning or losing. He loved jazz and old school music as well as gospel.  Another favorite past time activity was taking long walks through the neighborhood or hiking through trails in the parks.

With a life marked by compassion, dedication, and unwavering faith, Henry Eugene Maddox Jr. touched countless hearts throughout his journey. His spirit of generosity and willingness to lend a helping hand made him a pillar of strength for friends and neighbors alike. Those who encountered Henry often spoke of his calmness, warmth and humility, and simple acts of kindness. His laughter could light up a room.

On June 11, 1999, Henry was united in Holy Matrimony to Gloria Dean Lovett.  They were married for 26 years.  He was a loving father to his two sons, Michael Eugene Maddox and Brian Theodore Timothy Maddox, Sr. (sons of deceased wife Marilyn Thomas Maddox) and two stepdaughters, Chatara La Chelle’ Morgan and Adrienne Nicole (Morgan) Johnson (who he gained in his union with Gloria).  He had five grandchildren whom he dearly loved.

Henry Eugene Maddox, Jr. departed this life on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at the age of 69. He was surrounded by his loving wife Gloria, sons, step-daughters and other family members. Loved ones who preceded him in death include his father, Henry Eugene Maddox, Sr.; mother, Charlotte Dean (Rogers) Maddox, and brother, Sean Maddox.
