HELEN G. SUMMERVILLE

Helen G. Summerville, 90, peacefully gained her wings and entered eternal rest on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at 6:25 a.m. A devoted mother, grandmother, great‑grandmother, sister, nurse, and faithful servant of God, Helen lived a life defined by love, service, and unwavering faith.

Born October 24, 1935, in Jonben, West Virginia, Helen was the youngest daughter of Junior and Ethel Walker, both of whom preceded her in death. She was one of nine children, all of whom also preceded her in passing. Raised in Beckley, she received her early education through the Beckley, West Virginia public school system. Helen accepted Christ at an early age and remained a devoted servant of the Lord throughout her life. Her faith guided her steps, strengthened her spirit, and shaped the foundation of her life’s purpose.

As a young woman, Helen moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, to assist a family friend. It was there she chose to build her home, her career, and her family. On April 28, 1960, she married the love of her life, Henry L. Summerville, and together they raised four children: David A. Summerville (Sharon), Dennis M. Summerville (Jymmye), Dawn Michelle Summerville (Scott Samuels), and Diane L. Mitchell (Leonard).

Helen pursued her passion for caring for others by earning her Licensed Practical Nursing degree from Indianapolis Day Adult in August 1960. She began her nursing career at General Hospital (now Eskenazi Health) and later continued at Methodist Hospital (now part of IU Health), where she retired in 1995. Retirement, however, did not slow her down. Helen continued serving others through her work in several Indianapolis‑area nursing homes. Throughout her distinguished career, she mentored many aspiring nurses and formed lifelong friendships. In a beautiful full‑circle moment, many of the nurses she once guided were among those who cared for her in her final days.

Helen embraced life with joy, curiosity, and a love for adventure. She enjoyed shopping, traveling, collecting elephants, and trying her luck at the casino—an activity she proudly and enthusiastically enjoyed. Whether traveling to Las Vegas, taking bus trips to Tunica or Wheeling, or relaxing on the beach, Helen cherished every moment. She especially treasured trips with her daughters, creating memories from Washington, D.C., to Myrtle Beach and beyond.

A devoted member of University United Methodist Church, Helen faithfully served on the usher board, participated in the Live Wires group, and regularly attended Sunday School and Bible study. Her warmth, kindness, and fellowship touched countless lives, and everyone who knew her carries a story of a special moment shared with her.

Above all, Helen was deeply devoted to her family and friends. She cherished every opportunity to spend time with those she loved, and her presence brought comfort, laughter, and light.

Helen’s legacy lives on through her beloved children and her cherished grandchildren: Devin M. Summerville, Wesley T. Hare, Sydnee R. Summerville, Jordan L. Mitchell, Leonard R. Mitchell Jr., Jared E. Summerville, and Nena S. Summerville; and her great‑grandchildren: Santana R. Hare, JaVeah Mitchell, and Jordan L. Mitchell Jr.

Though she will be deeply missed, her love, faith, and joyful spirit will continue to shine through the lives of all who were blessed to know her.
