Harriette Marie Young was born March 30, 1930, in Denmark, Tennessee; the fourth child of the late Lacy and Nettie Greer. She was educated in the Madison County Public School district in Jackson, Tennessee; where she was also an infamous basketball player.
Marie professed her faith in Christ at an early age at Denmark Baptist Church. She married the late Floyd Young in 1947. To this union, six children were born: W. Darlene Gibson, James Young, Pearletta Stovall, Howard, Kathy and Wayne Young. After the family moved to Indianapolis in 1952, she united with the Church of the Living God, CWFF. In 1986, she united with the Haughville Seventh Day Adventist Church where she was an active member, holding numerous positions such as Head Treasurer, Head Usher, Deaconess Leader, Hospitality Leader, just to name a few.
Marie graduated from the IU Medical Center Nursing Program in 1956. She began her nursing career in Obstetrics for 9 years, followed by 29 years in Radiation Oncology. She retired from nursing in 1992. Marie was a passionate advocate for the homeless population. After retirement, she continued volunteering at the Dayspring Homeless Shelter and Hope for Homeless. She also provided invaluable leadership in organizing the IHN program (Indianapolis Interfaith Hospitality Network) at the Haughville SDA church for over 20 years.
Marie was a dedicated member of her community: she established the Riverside Block club, where she served as President for more than 25 years and was also an active member of the Riverside Civic League.
Marie loved her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Young; daughter, W. Darlene Gibson; son James Young, and siblings Clifton Greer, Lenola Bond, James Greer and Zelma Ellison.
Her memory will be cherished by her devoted daughters, Pearletta Stovall and Kathy Young; daughter in-law, Joyce Young; sons Howard Young and Wayne Young; and sister Willie Floyd Brooks (Johnny).
She will be dearly remembered by her grandchildren, Aldray Gibson Jr. (Andrea), Darryl Gibson (Kim), Kevin L. Gibson, Kelly Cornelious (Melvin), Chris Young, Debora Holmes (Michael), Vanessa Stokley (Sheryl), Maurice Young, Devon Stovall, Kimberly Stovall, Kristina Stovall, Keysha Young, Desmond Adeniyi, Dominic Young, Todd Jackson, Dominique Young, Passion Young, Anati Young, Iiah Young and Ankon Young; and by her 42 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
H. Marie Young was a daughter, sister, mother, mentor, matriarch, and a friend…and will be sorely missed!
