GAIL BURRIS Obituary

Gail Lorna Wilson-Burris was born on June 17, 1951, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Paul and Mildred Wilson. She was raised in Indianapolis and received her education through the Indianapolis Public Schools, graduating from the historic Crispus Attucks High School. During her time there, Gail was active in her studies and a proud member of the school choir, which went on to produce a successful album—now preserved in the Crispus Attucks Museum.

Gail had a lifelong passion for caring for others. As an adult, she became a Certified Nursing Assistant, dedicating herself to serving the elderly with compassion and dignity. She also worked in the restaurant industry, where her strong work ethic and vibrant personality left a lasting impression.

In the 1960’s, Gail became a passionate activist, standing up for the rights of African-American communities and speaking out against injustice. Her fiery spirit and unwavering voice were a force for change—and a reflection of the strength she carried throughout her life.

Gail married the love of her life, Duane Burris Sr., in the 1970’s, and together they raised five sons. She was a proud mother and a loving, yet firm, presence in her family’s life. Known for her strong will and quick wit, Gail was never afraid to speak her mind—but those who knew her best also knew the deep love, generosity, and compassion that guided her every action.

From a young age, Gail professed her faith in Jesus Christ. She was a devoted member of Christ Missionary Baptist Church for many years. After the passing of her beloved husband Duane in 2018, she found a new church home with Scott's United Methodist Church, where she continued to grow in her faith and community.

On April 15, 2025, Gail departed this life and entered into eternal rest at the age of 73. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Duane Burris Sr.

She leaves behind a beautiful legacy in her five sons: Frazier Wilson Sr., Duane Burris Jr., Niles (Samone) Burris, Benjamin (Shana) Burris, and Karl (Cherri) Burris. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 12 siblings, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and cherished friends.

Gail’s life was full of music, purpose, laughter, love, and the kind of strength that leaves a permanent mark on everyone she touched. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
