Frederick Cox, Sr. was born in Ayden, North Carolina on August 26, 1938, and he transitioned to his Heavenly Home on August 11, 2025. He was the third child of eight children born to Willie Chester and Willie Carey Cox, who preceded him in death, along with his sisters, Dicy Louise Pope and Mary E. Taft and a brother, Patterson Harry Cox.
Fred graduated from South Ayden High School, Ayden, North Carolina in1956 with honors. He was accepted at several of the historically black colleges and universities in the area; however, he made the choice to enlist in the U. S. Navy, where he served honorably for four years..
After his discharge from the Navy, Fred returned home to North Carolina for a short period of time, and he was employed by East Carolina University as an Activity Bus Driver. From this experience, his passion for driving developed, and he later relocated to New York and began his career as a package delivery driver for the United Parcel Service in New York City. He was later promoted to the position of a tractor- trailer driver for UPS, and he retired from the company after 25 years of service. He received several commendations and awards for his safety record of driving during his tenure. His favorite pastime, when not driving his tractor trailer, was cruising along Webster Avenue in his Buick LeSabre. Fred was known for his neatness in the way he dressed and before the word, “Swag”, was invented, he already had it.
Fred was an artistically gifted person. He could draw and was very creative in the area of woodwork. Fred replicated his entire home both inside, including the furniture pieces and kitchen appliances, as well as the outside to include the brick work. Fred created an art piece that he titled, “Church Lady” which revealed a unique perspective about the Pastor’s wife that no one else could capture in pictures or on canvas.
Fred is survived by his wife, Terrie; his daughter, Cassandra Mack (John); sons, Frederick Cox, Jr. (Jennifer Anita), and Anthony Darnell Cox, Sr. (Jewell); stepdaughter, Leslie Moore (Thomas); his grandchildren, Alexandra Mack, Josefina Mack, Tiara Jasmine Cox, Anthony Darnell Cox, Jr., Taylor Alliyah Renee Cox, and a great-grandson, Tahleek Amir Cox.
