Father Clifford R. Vogelsang entered eternal life on May 7, 2026, two days after the 63rd anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. A devoted priest, teacher, and faithful servant of the church, Father Vogelsang spent his life ministering to the people of Indiana with wisdom, humility and generosity.
Born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, Father Clifford was the son of Clifford R. Vogelsang and Katherine Kaid Vogelsang. He attended St. Joan of Arc Catholic School in Indianapolis before continuing his studies and priestly formation at Saint Meinard Seminary.
Father Vogelsang was ordained to the priesthood on May 5, 1963. During the first nine years following his ordination, he served as a history instructor at the former Latin School in Indianapolis, where he inspired students through his love of learning and thoughtful teaching.
Over his many years of wise and selfless service, Father Clifford faithfully nurtured parishes throughout central and southern Indiana. Parishioners knew him as a compassionate pastor, a dedicated priest, and a steady presence in their lives through times of joy, sorrow and faith.
In retirement, Father Clifford continued to pursue his lifelong interests in the study of history and an appreciation of art. Even after retiring from full-time ministry, he generously continued serving the faithful by assisting with Masses whenever needed.
Father Clifford will be deeply missed by the many Hoosiers whose lives were enriched by his ministry, kindness, and enduring devotion to the Church.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at St. Luke Catholic Church. May he rest in the peace of Christ whom he served so faithfully for 63 years of priesthood.
