EVELYN GUERIN Obituary

Reflections

Mrs. Evelyn Guerin, “Mama”, as she was affectionately known to many, was born December 2, 1924, in Montgomery County, Tennessee.  She was the twin sister of Magalene Weatherford, and the daughter of the late Frank and Georgia Ella Porter Hatcher.

Mama was educated within the Montgomery County School  System as a child.  Later in life, Mama attended Arsenal Technical High School, where she received her GED and acquired culinary skills. Mama was employed by the    Indianapolis Public School System, as a cafeteria manager, until she retired. A dedicated Christian woman, she was a faithful member of Kingsley Terrace Church of Christ.

Mama was united in Holy Matrimony with Edward Lee Guerin, who preceded her in death.

Mama was an avid gardener. Every year her garden overflowed with a variety of vegetables including tomatoes, collard greens, and a mix of various  peppers.  Over the years, Mama’s garden expanded to include a wider selection of vegetables, which she was able to share with her family and neighbors. The flowers she planted were just as plentiful. Every spring and summer, roses, tulips, and her favorite marigolds, beautified her yard. But nothing grew more than Mama’s love for God, family, and for everyone she met. Everyone who met Mama knew her love was sincere. She assisted anyone who needed help without hesitation, even when it cost her to go without. Mama displayed this same love towards her family. Although Mama had eight children, her love was equally  extended to each of them. She continuously sacrificed to make sure her children never went without. She offered this same love to her grandchildren: feeding, bathing, cooking, and watching them without complaint. Mama showered her love upon her children, but she was also stern in her teachings. Mama had no problem meeting you down the street with a switch in hand. Although Mama’s life was hard at times, with the help from God, church, and community, she raised beautiful children and grandchildren, while having a full time career.

During retirement, Mama enjoyed cooking, gardening, laughing, singing, rummaging, and spending more time with her children, grandchildren, Bella (cat), and friends.  We will forever miss our Dear Mother.

Our Heavenly Father saw that Mama was in need of rest, so He called her Home on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at the age of ninety-eight years five months and eight days. She was preceded in death by son, Stanley Jones; grandson,               Jordan Henry; four brothers, Joe Davis Hatcher, Frank Hatcher, James Hatcher, and Wilbur C. Hatcher; and four sisters, Alberta Ogburn, Jean McReynolds, Magalene Weatherford, and Maude Elizabeth Hatcher.

She leaves to cherish her fond memories, Hervey Guerin (Brenda),                 Sharon Henry (Herbert), Marilyn Guerin, Wanda Arteaga (Benjamin), Ramona Guerin, Danny Guerin (Twana) and Cynthia Guerin; eleven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God: …”
