Mrs. Edwina LaVenia Johnson was born on December 23, 1932, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She was the oldest of four siblings born to the late Clarence, Sr. and Jonita Burr.
Edwina professed a belief in Christ and was baptized at an early age. In 1936 the family moved to Detroit, Michigan where she spent eights years. In 1945 the family moved to Akron, Ohio where she attended Akron Public Schools, graduating from West High School in 1949.
After settling in Indianapolis, Indiana, Edwina was united in Holy Matrimony to Marion L. Johnson on March 18, 1957. They enjoyed over thirty-six years of marital bliss until his untimely death in 1994.
Edwina retired from Indianapolis Public Schools as an Assistant Education in 1995. She worked at schools #4, 23, 32, 67, and 87.
Edwina was a faithful member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church for over fifty years. She served in multiple ministries such as the choir, the Nurses Board, Mother’s Board, in the day care, and with the Missionaries.
Edwina enjoyed nurturing children. She was a mother to the entire neighborhood. She also enjoyed shopping with her granddaughter and teaching her entire family how to cook and clean. Edwina had a major skills in the kitchen. She enjoyed helping and giving wherever it was needed and always being a caregiver.
Edwina left her earthly home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 21, 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion “Lewis” Johnson; two sons, SSG Darryl A. Johnson and Ernest Johnson, Sr.; two siblings, Clarence Burr, Jr. and Clareta Beckley; and one great-granddaughter, Chaniya Johnson.
Edwina leaves to cherish her memories, four daughters, Bernadine Thomas, of Houston, Texas, Deborah Washington (Luther) of Long Beach,California, Jina King (Robert) of Canton, Ohio, and Jonita Johnson of Indianapolis, Indiana; six sons, Keith Thomas, Sr., of Akron, Ohio, David (Linda), Dean (Danita), Douglas, Drew, and Renaud Johnson all of Indianapolis, Indiana; one sister, Denise Gunn (Melvin) of Victorville, California; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces ,nephews, cousins, and all of the children in the neighborhood and friends.
