Donald B. Riggins Sr., affectionately known as Big Don, was born July 23, 1937, to Henry and Sara (Haglar) Riggins. Don graduated from George Washington High School. He was preceded in death by his son, Donald B. Riggins Jr.; brothers, Alonzo Wynns, Rufus Wynns, and Otis Riggins Sr.; and sisters, Elizabeth Riley, Gladys Wynns Ballard, and Johnnie Mae Floyd.
On July 16, 1977, he married Beverly G. (Carter-Sanders) Riggins. Don loved boxing, bowling, and watching basketball and football, and he was a proud fan of the I.U. Hoosiers. He was an active member of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, where he enjoyed volunteering in the male choir and served as a trustee. Don was also a proud business owner and a dedicated supervisor at the Department of Public Works (DPW).
Don is survived by his wife, Beverly Riggins; children, Cheryl Campbell (Lawrence), Nicole Sanders, Anthony Sanders (Tonya), and Jonathon Riggins; sister, Pearlee Edwards; and grandchildren, Jarron Coleman, Sean Riggins, Sherrell Clemons, Adrian Jackson, Anthony Sanders Jr. (Kala), Karlene Britton, Jazmin Sanders, Jonathon Riggins, Jadah’ Riggins, and Jonae’ Riggins. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Brielle Jackson and Jackson Thomas. Don leaves behind a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom brought him immense joy.
Throughout his life, Don answered to many names Big Don, Papa, Uncle Bill, Sunshine, and countless others each one a reflection of the special relationships he built with those around him. Don’s legacy lives on in the many lives he touched.
