Russell Crawford was born in Starkville, Mississippi on October 19, 1949. He was the son of Oscar L. Crawford Sr. and Malven Crawford.
Russell attended school in District #189 in East St. Louis, Illinois. He accepted Christ at the age of seven at Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in East St. Louis, under the pastorship of Rev. William P. Alexander.
Russell was employed by the Fire Department as an EMT. In 1983 Russell, relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana. He later united with Friendship Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorship of Rev. Dr. Ronald Covington, Sr., where he served as a Deacon. Russell was employed by Shapiro’s Delicatessen in a leadership role of food preparation for over thirty-seven years. Russell later retired in 2020.
Deacon Russell Crawford departed this earthly life on Friday, May 9, 2025, at the age of seventy-five years six months and twenty days. Russell’s parents preceded him in death.
He is survived by his daughter, Latoshia Crawford; his sons, Ja’mon Crawford, and Leonard Baker McKinney; brothers, Oscar L. Crawford, Wynard Crawford, Sr. (Deborah) and Authur Crawford (Kenya); sisters, Linda Jackson and Debra Hibbler; along with a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
