DAWN WALKER Obituary

Dawn Renay Walker was born on November 11, 1966, in Hammond, Indiana, the beloved daughter of Willie Leonard Steele and Verna Jean Hester Steele.

She was educated in the Hammond School System, attending Wallace Elementary and graduating from Hammond High School. Dawn furthered her education at Sawyer Business School, preparing her for a successful career. She was employed with Sam’s Club for 15 years, where she served as a dedicated supervisor until her retirement in 2015.

On May 16, 1988, Dawn was united in marriage to the love of her life, James T. Walker, Sr. She was raised in the fear and admonition of the Lord and was a faithful member of Bethel Church of God in Christ.

Dawn’s favorite pastimes included cooking, singing, traveling, decorating, shopping, camping, playing board games, and spending time with loved ones. She enjoyed dressing up, being the life of the party, and sharing her infectious personality with everyone she met. Known for her optimism, drive, and outspokenness, she inspired others with her big heart and motivated spirit.

Affectionately called “T-Nae”, Dawn was the matriarch of her family. She cherished every holiday, making sure everyone had a plate and a place at the table. She was the one her family turned to in times of need, always offering wisdom, comfort, and love. Above all else, Dawn was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, and friend who gave love freely and abundantly. Her memory and legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched.

On Thursday, September 11, 2025, Dawn Renay Walker went home to be with the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Left to celebrate her life and legacy are her loving and devoted husband, James T. Walker, Sr.; son, James T. Walker, Jr.; daughter, Raven S. Walker; brothers, Prince, Anthony and Troy Steele; grandsons, James T. Walker III and Kyng Collins; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Dawn’s life was a radiant example of love, faith, and family. She will be truly missed but never forgotten.
