Mrs. Breatha M. (Brown) Collins, the daughter of the late Nicolas and Idella Ferguson Brown was born December 31, 1930, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Breatha accepted Christ at an early age and attended Church of Christ Holiness, Harding Street Church of God and Harvest Prayer Center.
Breatha attended Indianapolis Public School #42 and Crispus Attucks High School.
Breatha was united in marriage to Ernest Collins Sr. April 24,1953. In this union, they welcomed seven children. Breatha was employed by Western Electric for seventeen years until she returned to the home to raise the children full-time. Years later,
Breatha was then employed by Franklin Township Schools at Wanamaker Elementary and Indianapolis Public Schools at Julian D. Coleman (110). Breatha’s compassion for children and youth, evolved as did the relationships between she and her students. Breatha enjoyed mentoring the students she taught and the community in which she lived - whereas the doors to their family home were always extended to loved ones.
Breatha had an innate talent for the written word and was a great storyteller, in addition to being a great writer. Breatha, also loved reading, baking, (the peach cobbler and sweet potato pie are unmatched) solving puzzles as well as playing cards. Breatha was witty, smart, outspoken and an undefeated backgammon player.
Mrs. Breatha M. (Brown) Collins departed this life on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at 91 years, 11 months and 4 days. Breatha’s daughters, Karen L. Collins and Tina M. Collins as well as one son, Ronald J. Collins preceded her in death.
She is survived by two daughters, Deitra A. Shelton (Michael), and Tanya R. Green (Ward); two sons, Ernest Collins, Jr. and Darryl W. Collins; fourteen grandchildren, Brittany C. Collins; Brittany I. Jackson (Kendric), Hope A. Jones, Amber N. Green, Aaron M. Shelton, Kayla R. Collins, Malaysia A. Collins, Marcus D. Collins, Michaiah A. Shelton, Chloe M. Henderson, Nia R. Shelton, Aisha Y. Green, Alexis A. Green. Ariel M. Green, seven great-grandchildren; Mariah Y. Hill, Kaliyah M. Jackson, Keng M. Jackson, Maliyah A. Hyten, Aarion M. Shelton, Kai A. Shelton, Russell E. Lewis, III and one sister, Norma A. Brown Beckwith.
