BETTY MZUMARA Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Betty Gondwe Mzumara departed on July 19, 2026, at sixty years of age, leaving an unfillable void in the hearts of all who knew her. Betty Mzumara was born on September 26, 1965 in Lusaka, Zambia. She was the daughter of the late Fred and Audrey (née Mwahimba) Gondwe.

After high school, Betty worked as a bank teller at BCC Bank and Finance Bank in Zambia. She later transitioned to be a primary school teacher in Malawi.

Betty was a woman of God, who was passionate about spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. When she arrived in the United States, she soon became a member of Haugville SDA Church, alongside her husband and growing family, where she often sang and was a part of the choir. Later, she became a faithful member of Chapel West SDA Church. Over the years, she enjoyed serving as a Women’s Ministry Director, singing in the choir, preaching, teaching Sabbath school, worship leading, being a deaconess and ultimately serving God in any way she could.

Betty married the love of her life, Smart Mzumara on August 29, 1993, at Falls SDA Church in Lilongwe, Malawi. They had their first child, a daughter, Tapiwa Mzumara in January of 1995. In May of 1997, she together with their daughter, joined her husband who had immigrated to the United States in December of 1996. This fulfilled her dream of coming to America and she made Indianapolis, Indiana her home. She later had two sons with her husband: Kondwani in 1998 and Alinase in 2000.

Betty was a homemaker with many talents. She often was utilized as a seamstress, making curtains and various sewing projects for her friends. She also started an in-home daycare for many years, providing parents with a safe and welcoming environment for their children. She also had a small business, O Taste and See, where she baked sweet treats. Her main hobbies included painting, sketching, writing, reading and cultivating her garden with flowers.

Despite many health changes, Betty was still active in her community, where she served as the neighborhood chaplain. She had compassion and love for every neighbor and was often praying and sharing the Gospel with them during their times of difficulty. She was also a volunteer at Christamore House, serving the elderly residents.

She will now join her husband and parents in rest, who preceded her in death. She leaves behind to cherish her memories her daughter, Tapiwa Mzumara; sons, Kondwani Mzumara and Alinase Mzumara; sisters, Malita (née Gondwe) Kabaghe, Twabengwa (née Gondwe) Siame, Bayeko Gondwe-Haindongo; brothers Fred Gondwe and Levi Gondwe; and a host of loving family members.

She was loved by her family, friends, church family, neighbors, and many others who had the opportunity to witness her vibrance. Though we wish she was still present with us, we have this hope that when Jesus returns, we shall be reunited in the sky.
