Betty Jean Sanders Hampton was born into this world on June 15, 1936, to John E. Sanders and Johnnie Harrington Sanders Johnson in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Betty attended Crispus Attucks High School. She married her high school sweetheart, James Hampton, and they bore seven children. After their divorce, Betty raised and cared for her children alone. Each child was unique with their individual talents and characteristics. Betty built a family unit that cares for each other and shows loyalty to other relatives. Betty’s loving manner was shared with everyone she met, and she was loved by all who knew her.
Betty was a faithful member of First Baptist Church North Indianapolis for over sixty years. She was known for her greens at pitch-in meals.
Betty was a dependable employee at Indiana University Hospital for thirty years, serving as a Sterile Processor. Surgeons requested to work with her. After retiring, she was called back to the hospital for another five years. With retirement, she continued the Avon business she had previously started. For years she continued to walk to the hospital to make deliveries.
Betty loved music and dancing. She attended every concert she could, where the local and visiting musicians all knew her by name. Family picnics at community parks were also a favorite. For many years she was an active participant with the Flanner House Senior Programs including exercises, playing dominos, water aerobics, and many field trips.
On April 12, 2026, Betty transitioned from this life to be in the presence of the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two of her children, Diana M. Hampton and Debra R. Hampton McCreary.
Betty leaves the rest of her children to cherish precious memories - Jacqueline A. Hampton (Neal) Jameson, Dwayne K. Hampton, Angela D. Hampton, Michael J. Hampton, and Kimberly E. Hampton. She also leaves twelve grandchildren - Letha Hartley (Samuel) Napier, Nichelle Miller, Desiree Hampton (Timothy) Ware, Deanna Hampton, Lyniece Bailey, Damon (Joan) Hampton, Tyree Hampton, DeSean Hampton, Latrice Hampton, Tamara Williams, Robert Underwood, and Keith (Jawanza) Hampton, and thirty-five great-grandchildren, and nineteen great-great-grandchildren are currently included in the Betty Hampton descendants. Extended family members include Thomas Hampton, Adrian Hampton, Anthony Hampton, Dewayne Andrews, Neal Jameson, Jr., Anthony Board, and many other relatives and friends who were all loved by Betty.
