BESSIE GORDON Obituary

Bessie Lee Gordon-Douglas, age 89, was born on September 16, 1936, in Ripley, Mississippi, the daughter of Ernest and Gussie Cooper. Following her mother’s passing when she was just the tender age of four, she was lovingly raised by her aunts, Lula Jones and Paulean Cooper, in New Albany, MS.  There, her family was deeply woven into the community’s fabric. They owned and operated the town’s grocery store and circulated a community newsletter thus establishing themselves as pillars of service and stability for local black families.

The Cooper home radiated warmth and generosity. Among the first families in New Albany to own a television, they opened their living room to neighbors and friends for major sporting events, especially the iconic bouts of Joe Louis. These gatherings of community, unity, and pride instilled in Bessie a lifelong commitment to opening both her heart and her home to others.

Bessie graduated from Union County Training School in 1954 and continued her studies at Jackson State University “Thee I Love,” earning her bachelor’s degree in 1958. Upon graduation, she moved to Natchez, Mississippi, where she served as a student teacher which began her avowed vocation of shaping young minds. While there, she met and married her best friend, Wesley “Wes” Gordon. Together, they welcomed two children, Carolyn Demetria and Courtney Benet Gordon, who were the joy of their lives.

In 1966, the family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where Bessie began and concluded her dedicated teaching career with IPS, serving at both School #42 and School #27.  A devoted professional, Bessie earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Indiana University in 1972. For 37 years, from 1958 onward, she touched countless young lives as a respected and beloved educator known for her compassion, excellence, and steadfast commitment to her students growth.

Beyond the classroom, Bessie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, mother-in -law and friend. She cherished reading, traveling, outings to the horse track, and faithfully attending every event involving her children and grandchildren.  A gifted cook, she was famed for her homemade rolls, potato salad, and banana pudding, dishes that defined family gatherings and will be forever cherished. Her faith, anchored early by confession and baptism at Hall Chapel Church and later through membership at Eastern Star Church, guided her throughout her personal and professional journeys.  For over 36 years, Bessie and Wes built a beautiful union centered on love for one another, their children, their family, and their community. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wes, in 1995.

After retiring, Bessie remained a loving presence for her family. She later remarried, sharing many meaningful years and memories with James Douglas. For the last years of her life, Bessie made her home with her son, Courtney, and his wife, Juanita, whom she lovingly called her “other daughter.” Together, with the knowledgeable professionals, compassionate caregivers, friends and family members, God placed in their path, Courtney and Juanita formed a circle of love that supported Bessie through her journey with Alzheimer’s. In her final chapter, Hooverwood Living became a cherished home away from home, providing her with exceptional care as her needs progressed. Her journey, with all the complexities, was one of life’s greatest blessings because of the many people that shared in it so graciously. Our hearts are full of gratitude for each of you!

Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Gussie Cooper; second husband, James Douglas; aunts, Lula Jones and Paulean Cooper, and sisters, Addie Mae Cobb (Robert), Evelyn, Christine and Bonnie.  She is survived by her children: Carolyn Demetria Gordon-Spells (The late Melvin) and Courtney Gordon (Juanita); grandchildren, Brittany Gordon, Jessica Gordon, Tiffany Weatherspoon (Schuyler), Julian Henderson-Nnabuife (Alvin), Jailyn Henderson and Gavin Henderson (Bryanne);  great-grandchildren, Nia, Savannah, Schuyler Jr., Vernon,   Noah, Kennedy, Caidyn, Gianni, Imon, G’Yarra, Grasyn and Sensei, and a host of other loving family members and friends.

Bessie’s life will be remembered not only for her profound impact as an educator, but also for her unwavering dedication to family, her deep community roots, and the extraordinary love, strength, and generosity she extended to all who were blessed to have known her.
